Ambiente - Talents Zeitgeist in Great Demand

Applications came from a total of 33 countries and eleven of them will be represented at Ambiente, Frankfurt from 8th to 12th February: 'next year's Talents are distinguished by internationality, creativity and a pronounced feeling for the zeitgeist of the consumer-goods world', the organiser says. The young designers chosen will present their ideas, prototypes and initial small product series on 20 stands in Hall 6.1. The promotional programme of Messe Frankfurt gives them the chance to make their first contacts with the industry and potential business partners at the world's biggest international trade fair for the consumer-goods sector.

Subjects of current social interest are particularly popular among the students, graduates and start-up design studios. 'Best agers', sustainability and purposeful functions, as well as pleasure and individuality are to be found in the work of these young avant-garde designers.

Nobody gets any younger
.
Against the background of a growing life expectancy, this ancient saying is gaining more and more in significance. However, it is only in recent years that companies and designers have adjusted to the fact that although people are living longer on average, they are becoming much younger when it comes to questions of style. Design student Dési Doell, Berlin, takes up this special aspect in her 'Design 4 All' packaging series.

Thanks to their aesthetic appeal, her practical everyday aids, with which one can open or carry bottles more easily, are of interest to all age groups.

Tried and tested for the young ones is the product offered by the A4 design office from Japan: designer Mamoru Fukui has translated a traditional learning and balancing game, which calls for stones to be stacked carefully, into a modern design language. With his beautifully made wooden version, he turns a game of skill into a tactile pleasure.

For designers 'Rafinesse & Tristesse', the aim is sustainability in an broader sense. They recycle metal canisters, as well as metal and plastic lids, to make seats and kitchen furnishings. What's more, each and every one of the hand-made utensils is unique. The 'speed stool' of Sweden's 'defyra' also makes use of articles that others throw away. His stool consists of old skis, which ensures that all differ from each other.
