Symphony takes Kitchen Design to a New Level

Symphony has taken kitchen design to a new level - Code Level 6 to be precise - by supplying the kitchen for the revolutionary Barratt Green House.

The first home by a mainstream housebuilder to meet the highest level six of the Government's Code for Sustainable Homes, the Barratt Green House features a contemporary white gloss kitchen from Symphony, with striking claret accents.

Barratt Developments' Group Technical Manager, Terry Ritchie, said: 'This project proves that greener living doesn't have to mean expensive design and we were delighted that Symphony was able to bring environmental as well as design expertise to the Barratt Green House kitchen. Our aim is to take what works with this project and apply it to housebuilding across the country.'

Symphony's Group Sales Director, Paul Kettlewell, comments: 'We have a long-established relationship with Barratt Developments and were delighted to join them on this exciting project, which is a UK first for the industry. The kitchen clearly demonstrates that you can achieve stunning design and quality, whilst still meeting the industry's increasing challenges on environmental sustainability and the Code for Sustainable Homes.'

Symphony was the first fitted furniture supplier to achieve ISO 14001 environmental accreditation and recently achieved full PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) Chain of Custody certification, covering all its kitchen, bedroom and bathroom furniture for the private and social housing markets, giving developers proof of environmentally-friendly purchase. The latest accreditation adds to the company's existing FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Chain of Custody certification.

The Barratt Green House, voted the winner of The Home for the Future design competition in the 2007 Mail on Sunday British Homes Awards, was designed by architects Gaunt Francis and has been built on the BRE (Building Research Establishment) Innovation Park at Watford.

Architect Andrew Sutton comments:

'Working with Symphony we were able to achieve the clean, horizontal lines we were looking for in the kitchen, but still utilise built-in units to optimise functionality.'

Interior designer for the project, Christine May, adds: 'Symphony's showroom was really useful in terms of the comprehensive range of designs available to inform our decisions. The colour palette for the whole house was very much black, white, grey and red, so Symphony's gloss white and claret kitchen worked perfectly with the over all look. Quality and clean lines were the hallmarks of the Barratt Green House and Symphony tailored its solutions exactly to fit those requirements."

The Symphony kitchen also features a contemporary sink from Blanco that sits flush to the worktop. The Blanco Zerox 6 S-IF sink with its modern, streamline look adds to the linear, sleek styling of the kitchen design. The stylish sink sits just 1mm above the worktop and is extremely easy to clean thanks to its low profile, providing a more hygienic option.

The 60mm European Oak worktops continue the natural feel of the kitchen design. Supplied by Sheridan Fabrications, the kitchen worktops offer a natural beauty due to their stunning and diverse natural graining. Made from solid hardwood timber, the work surfaces are also easy to maintain and are finely oiled to create a water-repellent surface. The European Oak worktops are also Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) accredited.
