John Brash Serves Up JB Antislip Plus Decking for Rick Stein

TV chef, Rick Stein has chosen John Brash JB Antislip Plus® decking for the refurbishment of his famous seaside restaurant.

The company supplied JB Antislip Plus® inserts, fitted into its Decksure® structural timber deck board, to refurbish the large outside decking area of the popular South West restaurant.

An integral part of the restaurant, the rooftop terrace is frequently used by customers for special parties such as weddings and birthdays and those simply wanting to enjoy the view and fresh sea air. John Brash JB Antislip Plus® inserts were a vital part of ensuring that this area remained safe at all times. The timber decking also helped retain the character of the original restaurant building and is now a welcome addition to the beautiful veranda which overlooks the harbour.

Opened in 1975, The Seafood Restaurant is internationally renowned for innovative cooking of the freshest fish and shellfish. Situated just across from the quay where trawlers moor, the fish literally comes straight off the boat and into the kitchen.

Due to its seafront location, the decking was at particular risk of becoming slippy from rain, waves and spray blowing in from the sea. The client recognised this and, in an effort to ensure maximum safety for customers, chose JB Antislip Plus® inserts fitted into the Decksure® boards as the safest solution. With over 11,000 accidents per year resulting from slips, trips or falls, health and safety is becoming an ever more important issue for restaurants.

Since being launched, JB Antislip Plus® inserts have been used on a number of prestigious projects to improve the safety of decking users. The Seafood Restaurant is the latest to take advantage of the benefits and as a spokesperson from the restaurant explains: 'The decking not only improves the safety for our customers it looks great too. Already many of our customers have commented on how much better the whole area looks.'

Christian Brash, Managing Director at John Brash, explains: 'It was great to be chosen to help complete this fabulous project. The decking area at the restaurant was at particular risk of becoming slippy due to spray from the sea and rain. JB Antislip Plus® will be the perfect way to ensure it remains safe at all times.'

JB Antislip Plus® has been independently tested by the Health & Safety Laboratory (HSL) using a Stanley Pendulum Test (the operation and calibration of which is described in BS7976:2002 parts 1-3). The Pendulum Test Values (PTVs) achieved during the testing significantly exceeded the minimum required classification for ‘low potential for slip’. Under the UKSRG guidelines, a surface is required to have a PTV of 36 or above to be considered to have a ‘low potential for slip.’ Two inserts, which were used on the restaurant, will achieve an average PTV of 63 or above, even when wet.

The durable, resin-based aggregate inserts are injected into grooves of the company’s market-leading Decksure® structural timber decking product. In addition to the medium grey coloured inserts that were used at the Rick Stein restaurant, JB Antislip Plus® inserts are also available in a range of colours including green, red, blue buff and yellow to draw attention to features such as slopes, steps and perimeters, helping to provide an additional safety feature.
