Water Efficient Bathroom Products

A look at the BMA Water Efficient Product Labelling Scheme, with a consumer bias and encouragement to look out for the new labels.

How green is your bathroom? No we are not asking you check the condition of your ancient Avocado plumbing! But if you are looking to replace your bathroom now is the time to consider installing the new water efficient products which are currently available.

‘There is no doubt that green issues are becoming more important in British homes,’ says Yvonne Orgill, Chief Executive of the Bathroom Manufacturers Association (BMA). ‘The UK government is encouraging everyone to take a fresh look at the way they use water. The pressure is on to encourage everyone to use our precious resource more efficiently.’

To assist all would-be bathroom buyers the BMA recently launched its Water Efficient Product Labelling Scheme. This new scheme helps consumers to differentiate between the products, and to choose the better performing and most water efficient ones.

Only those products which pass strict test criteria, as defined by technical experts within the UK bathroom industry, may carry the Water Efficiency Label.

To further help consumers, all the eligible products are shown in the lists accessible on the dedicated website at http://www.water-efficiencylabel.org.uk Bathroom Manufacturers are encouraged to use the label on their own websites, brochures and packaging, and on the product itself.

‘The key to water efficiency is reducing waste, not restricting use’ says Orgill.

‘All the products in the scheme are fully functional, easy to use and give the bathing experience we have come to expect. But the key point about them is that they are all designed to use water in the best and most efficient way possible. A truly green consumer can use the product lists on the website and choose his or her favourite product with confidence.’

All the major bathroom products are listed including WC suites, independent flushing cisterns, taps and tap assemblies, shower units and controls and baths. Where applicable, volumes of water used or flow rates are given.

So if you are about to refurbish your bathroom think green and ‘Look for the Label’
