Visitor Numbers Soar at Interbuild 2004
Attendances at Interbuild, the UK's building trade event, increased on each of the first four days and at the start of the fifth and final day, the overall visitor total was approaching 40,000. Said Event Director Steve Webb: 'I couldn't be more pleased. Right from the off the vibes have been positive and though our exhibitors have been rushed off their feet for the past two days they are not complaining.

Nobia reports 13% Increase in Post-Tax Profits for First Quarter 2004 and Rising Sales in UK
Sales progressed favourably as Nobia's continued market investments and good market growth resulted in strong organic growth. Net sales rose by 20 per cent to SEK 2,813 million (2,346). Organic growth, i.e. the increase in net sales adjusted for currency effects and for comparable units, was 9 per cent. Organic growth for the UK operation was 5 per cent and for the Nordic operation, 13 per cent.

Sanitec Maintains Sales Volumes in 2003 but Profits Dip by 5.2%
Despite a continuing economic slump in some of its main markets, Sanitec was generally able to maintain its net sales at previous year's levels after adjustments for foreign currency exchange differences and special items in the prior year. Net sales for 2003 were EUR 951.1 million compared to EUR 985.4 million in 2002 which is a decrease of 3.5% or EUR 34.3 million. Operating profit for the year 2003 decreased by 5.2% or EUR 2.7 million to EUR 49.4 million from EUR 52.1 million for the year 2002

Villeroy & Boch 2003 Results Show Drop, but 2004 Outlook is Bright
Villeroy & Boch income for the 2003 business year was influenced by high one-off expenditure for production changes and also by special expenses of Euro 38.5 million for restructuring. Without the restructuring expenditure, pre-tax profit of Euro 7.7 million would have been posted. For 2004 sales higher than in the previous year and a positive result are expected. In the first quarter of 2004, sales increased by 5.6% over the previous year.

American Standard Reports 31% Rise in Diluted EPS on 12% Sales Gain
American Standard Companies Inc has announced record first-quarter sales, net income and diluted earnings per share. Earnings were $1.14 per diluted share, up 31 percent from first quarter last year. In March, the company had raised its first-quarter earnings range to $1.09-$1.15 per diluted share, up from the $1.02-$1.12 range announced in January. Sales were $2.185 billion, up 12 percent from a year ago, and net income rose to $84.6 million, up 33 percent.

Maytag Reports Higher First Quarter Sales and Earnings
Maytag Corporation yesterday reported first quarter consolidated sales of $1.219bn, up 7.3 percent from $1.136bn in the same period of 2003. Earnings for the quarter 'met the company's expectations'. First quarter 2004 reported operating income was $63.6m, and reported net income was $38.7m, or 49 cents per share

The President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, and the Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi, together with Vittorio Merloni, have opened a new Merloni Elettrodomestici washing machine plant in Lipetzk (Russia). It is close to the refrigerator factory which the Company acquired in 2000.

Whirlpool Corporation Reports Strong First-Quarter Sales and Earnings
Whirlpool Corporation (NYSE:WHR) today announced first-quarter 2004 net earnings of $101m, or $1.43 per diluted share, compared to $91m, or $1.32 per diluted share, in the same period last year. First-quarter net sales of $3bn increased 10.7 percent from the same period last year.  Excluding currency translations, net sales increased approximately 5 percent.

Electrolux Chief Exec Hans Stråberg Spells out Cost Cutting Strategy in Light of Falling Profits
At the recent AGM, Electrolux Chief Exec Hans Stråberg reported a disappointing first quarter, with sales down by 4.9% and operating income down 5.2%. Although keen to point out that the drop in sales was entirely due to adverse currency movements (without which sales would have been up by over 4%), he spelt out a strategy of cost cutting through rationalisation and globalised manufacturing, in addition to increased spending on product development.

Learn how to Build a Bathroom in 48 hours at Interbuild 2004
A Birmingham construction company is set to launch a building system that allows homeowners to build an extension in a single weekend. Tyseley-based RCS launches its Pyro-Foam Pod system on to the market at Interbuild, the UK construction industry's premier trade event, which takes place from April 25 to 29 at the NEC. And Sales Manager Ian Leedham has plenty of evidence to back up the speed claims of adding an extra room to a house. 'Bathrooms are currently being installed by AEP Construction at a rate of one per day for Sutton Council in Surrey,' he explained.

Manufacturers Can't be Forced to Recall Dangerous Products and the Government is Dragging its Feet on Plugging this Gaping Hole in the Law
'According to a recent report at Which Online, seven people are killed every year by unsafe products which haven't been recalled - and 35 new products go on sale every year that prove dangerous, but aren't recalled. These estimates are from a Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) study in 2000 - yet the same department has missed a deadline for introducing new legislation to protect consumers from unsafe products. While it dithers, we all remain at risk. What's more, we think its proposals even when introduced could allow unscrupulous traders to continue to be irresponsible.' says the Consumers Association.

Located between the City and the West End, Matsuri High Holborn is designed to appeal to those who might not venture inside a traditional Japanese Restaurant, although traditionalists enjoy the high quality of service and tastes on offer. The project interior by Kajima Design involved the collaboration of, among others, Broughton, Tricon, Ideal Standard and Armitage Shanks.
