City
Living Kitchen Unit Earns Top Award for Young Designer!
An
innovative combined kitchen preparation and dining unit aimed at city
flat-dwellers has earned a young graduate a top design award sponsored
by the Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Specialists Association.
Jitendra
Mistrys superb idea netted him the Future of Design Award for the
Kitchen, Bathroom or Bedroom, one of the New Designers Awards presented
at the Islington Design Centre last month.
The holder of a first-class honours degree in furniture and product design
from Nottingham Trent University, Jitendra says his all-in-one compact
preparation and dining unit was designed for people who live within a
limited space.
The city living trend is growing all the time but in flats
there often isnt enough space to accommodate everything you need
in a kitchen or dining area, he explained.
My compact unit incorporates a preparation surface, pull-out dining
table and four stools, plus drawers and stainless steel bowls for the
storage of prepared food items during cooking time.
The unit is also mobile, to be manufactured from ash-veneered MDF
so that it is light and with a Corian surface.
KBSA chief executive Graham Hayden said after the presentation of the
award: Competition for this award was amazingly fierce but Jitendra
has emerged a most worthy winner. This is such a clever and practical
design, exactly the sort of thing the judges were looking for.
Jitendra is currently working on a Design Council product design scheme
for a household brush manufacturer but will be looking for a permanent
post later this summer. He has his own website, which can be accessed
at http://www.mistrydesigns.co.uk

ElcoBrandt
Wins Major Visual Creative Awards for its Appliance Brands
The
French 'Strategies Grand Prix' is the most prestigious award available
for advertising creative in France. For 2002, all the awards in the appliances
category were won by ElcoBrandt brands,
French brand Vedette and European brand, Brandt.
ElcoBrandt uses stunning visual imagery for many of its appliance brands
as part of pan European campaigns. This is highlighted in the UK by the
use of models to promote De Dietrich as a fashionable yet sophisticated
premium appliance brand. This imagery is used across advertising, brochures
and all forms of marketing material and immediately identifies the brand
- it was recently voted the brand with the highest communication campaign
awareness score in the French Household Press in 2002 (source MDA).
De Dietrich will start its consumer campaign in September to coincide
with the new launch of the 2003/4 range.

Kimberly-Clark
Professional gives free Tissue to 'World's Best Bathrooms'
Kimberly-Clark
Professional
has donated a year's supply of bath tissue to two of the 'World's Best
Bathrooms,' Pasha Restaurant and Club in Chicago, and Sloan's Ice Cream
Parlour in West Palm Beach, Fla. The donation reflects Kimberly-Clark
Professional's commitment to helping businesses enhance personal health
and hygiene.
'It's encouraging to see more and more businesses take such pride in their
restrooms,' said Jan Gottesman, tissue category manager for Kimberly-Clark
Professional. 'Not only are these restrooms modern and hip, but their
cleanliness and attention to detail also demonstrate a great respect for
the customer.'
The company provided one-year's worth of its SCOTT® JRT® Jr. Jumbo
Roll Tissue each to Pasha and Sloan's. Both restrooms were featured on
'The World's Best,' a Travel Channel television series. 'The World's Best'
series travels the globe in search of the finest luxuries and experiences,
from the greatest thrill parks to the most magnificent man-made wonders.
'An outstanding bathroom can make an already good establishment seem even
better,' said Gottesman. 'Conversely, people come out of a bad bathroom
feeling awful about that place of business. It just goes to show that
you can never underestimate the impact of the restroom.'
The owner of Pasha Restaurant and Club, Bobby Sedghi, agrees that a top-
shelf restroom offers much more than the run-of-the-mill lavatory. 'It's
a little treat for the ladies, who play a big role in our kind of establishment,'
says Sedghi about the elegant pink and mahogany restroom. 'We wanted to
give them something unique ... something really neat.'
'Cool' might best describe Sloan's high-tech restroom, with its transparent
doors made of futuristic two-layered glass. But the reactions from captivated
patrons are anything but chilly, says owner Sloan Kamenstein.
'Everyone who comes in here loves it,' he says about customers who are
stunned to find the bathroom doors fog up when locked and offer users
complete privacy. 'We wanted to do something fun and outrageous with the
bathroom. The fascinated looks we see when people walk out of there are
better than we even expected.'
Kimberly-Clark and its well-known brands are an indispensable part of
life for people in more than 150 countries. Every day, one in four people
around the world trust K-C's brands to enhance their health, hygiene and
well-being -- brands such as Kleenex, Scott, Huggies, Pull-Ups, Kotex
and Depend. For the second consecutive year, Kimberly-Clark has been named
to Fortune magazine's list of '100 Best Companies to Work For In America.'
With nearly 64,000 employees worldwide, the company has received similar
recognition in the U.K., Argentina, Australia, Korea and Thailand.

In a market that thrives on change, fashion and differentiation, design
plays a vital role in Blum's international lead. So the independent recognition

Numerous
Prizes Confirm Miele's Design Competence
2003
got off to a successful start for Miele with the receipt of the iF prize
awarded by the Industrie Forum Design, Hanover for the new DG 2660 steam
cooker.
'Design is classically defined as a concept to combine functionality and
elegance with practical and aesthetic aspects. Good design does not rely
on short-lived fads, emphasises the use of first-class materials and endeavours
to offer products reflecting a fine combination of high-quality workmanship
and simple elegance. This is the benchmark for all Miele product developments.
We intend to stick to our maxim of being modern without being faddish',
says Frido Jacobs, head of design at Miele.
'Short-lived fads and durable Miele household appliances do not go together,
since the exterior of any appliance at Miele is always seen in the context
of a product's inner values. 'Form follows function' is a pithy statement
often used by designers to stress the fact that styling should always
enhance a product's convenience benefits. Paramount attention is paid
to ensuring that all machine functions are self-explanatory: Ideally,
it should be possible to operate any Miele machine without first having
to refer to operating instructions. Finally, an appliance must simply
appeal to the user and blend in harmoniously with its surroundings.' Frido
adds.
Since 1965, Miele has received almost 80 national and international design
awards. The awards cover all product groups, from vacuum cleaners to washing
machines, tumble dryers, dishwashers through to kitchen appliances such
as coffee makers, hob units, ovens, cooker hoods, microwave ovens and
fitted kitchens. Some products received additional recognition in their
individual category such as 'Branch best' in 1995 for the S 310i vacuum
cleaner in corn yellow or 'Highest design quality' in 1998 for the CVA
620 stainless-steel coffee maker and 'Best of Category' in 2000 for the
S 536 vacuum cleaner.
