Exhibitions and Events

Kitchen Showcase 11th -13th September 2003, The Design Centre, Islington, London

Kitchen Showcase is a completely new concept, created to provide an event that focuses solely on kitchens and their design. Taking place over three days (two trade, one consumer) the event will 'showcase' up to twelve kitchen roomsets from leading manufacturers such as Poggenpohl, Scottwood and Callerton. In addition to this there will be a number of individual product booths showcasing kitchen related products.

Running alongside Kitchen Showcase will be Masterclass, a two day professional conference focusing on kitchen design, inspiration and knowledge. Day one of Masterclass will involve a series of keynote addresses on kitchen design from leading designers such as Johnny Grey, and Dick Powell; whilst day two has a working title of The Knowledge Conference.

Idèo Bain Confirms its Success and Names its new Bathroom Set Area 'Bathrooms of the World'

From 4th to 9th February 2004, Idèo Bain the Paris bathroom exhibition will be the professional event where everyone involved in the world of bathrooms will meet to discover the sector's new trends.

Over 80% of the 2004 show has already been sold. New exhibitors include: Delpha, Bisazza and Cristina.

Idèo Bain has now established itself as the key show for an entire industry and as an unmissable event at the start of 2004.

In 2002, Living Bathroom '100 Bathroom Ideas' was a great success with visitors and the press alike. For 2004, Idèo Bain - the Bathroom Exhibition has named its new area for bathroom sets: (labulle), bathrooms of the world.

The organisers have appointed Daniel Rozenzstroch* and Franáois Muracciole.* to design this area.

(labulle) bathrooms of the world will provide professionals and private individuals with the opportunity to discover ideas and to gain vital inspiration for the creation of new bathrooms. The project's designers have based their concept on the points of the compass, which provide four guiding themes:

*North: Scandinavian influences
*East: Asian rituals
*South: Mediterranean cultures
*West: European traditions

Within these four areas manufacturers will be able to display their collections in ways that satisfy the desires and needs of the visitors. Some of the bathrooms will be the work of well known designers and stylists.

'(labulle) bathrooms of the world is a unique source of inspiration and an event all of its own' declares Carine Tissot Caubet, the Exhibition Director.

Idèo Bain will be held in Hall 1 of Paris Expo Porte de Versailles in conjunction with Interclima, the international HVAC-R exhibition, which runs from 3rd to 6th February 2004.

Idèo Bain will also be open to the general public on 7th, 8th and 9th February 2004, when private individuals planning a bathroom will be able to visit.

Idèo Bain is an FISB (Fèdèration des Industries de la Salle de Bains / Federation of Bathroom Manufacturers) exhibition, organised by Reed Exhibitions. Every year Reed Exhibitions organises 440 events in 49 sectors of business.

Blum Shows the Future at Interzum

While, from a UK perspective, Interzum 2003 may not have had its usual overall buzz - what with ZOW preceding it, the British bank holiday and English half term - some of the halls lacked familiar faces. The Blum stand however seemed like the epicentre of something high on the Richter Scale.

The slogan down the side of the stand proclaimed 'Progress Through Motion' -'an all encapsulating concept of dynamic product development, and forward moving success for Blum and its customers across the world.' said the company.

'Impressive, inspirational, innovative - Blum's 2003 exhibit at Interzum was the Tate Gallery of modern furniture fittings and concepts. New products, solutions ideas and futuristic concepts combined to give a window on the future direction of kitchen design, manufacture and use.'

Centrepiece and central to the whole exhibit was the presentation of Dynamic Space®, Blum's registered, holistic vision of kitchen use and performance using the company's various systems, fittings and components to achieve the ultimate kitchen. The way in which kitchen (bedroom and other fitted furniture) should be designed and manufactured as well as lived in and used.

Kitchen designers have, for many years, relied on the 'working triangle' model for structure and ergonomics. Blum has looked beyond this.

The working triangle as a basis for kitchen layout is not dead - rather it has evolved. In fact it's come a long way.

Probably the main reason is that the concept is too simplistic for the modern kitchen. For starters the term 'working' must now be incorporated into the wider concept of 'living'. The amount of time we spend in our kitchens has increased dramatically as it has become the social hub of the household. From a single function area it has become host to a diverse range of activities ranging from cooking to leisure, working and entertaining.

Blum claims to have led the way in modern storage space concepts and has now recognised the importance of modern kitchen design through its new, registered 'Dynamic Space' concept. In essence this separates a kitchen into four main activity zones: Preparation, Cooking, Sink, Serving. 'Each of these activity zones' explains Blum's Michael Powell, 'should be strategically designed and organised to offer optimum storage and access to the commodities, implements, utensils and equipment relevant to their direct requirements. In this way the kitchen becomes highly functional and efficient.'

Blum says kitchen design must now take a radical change of direction. Using the Dynamic Space principal a kitchen should be designed from the 'inside out' with fixed shelves in base units a thing of the past and full extension access to allow all available space and proper organisation of space as priorities.

The basic geometry of the working triangle may have some relevance yet - but only in the context of a more comprehensive system of zones.
Storage solutions - developed by understanding the needs of customers from extensive international surveys - underpin the products of the Dynamic Space® concept. Mainly, full extension drawers and pull-outs, complete access to cabinets through advanced door hinging, internal organisation devices, and dynamic motion systems like Blumotion to facilitate wider, deeper and heavier units.

Interior Designers 'Intrigued' by Lacobel

Those designers intrigued by the possibilities of coloured glass used for interior cladding, wardrobe doors, drawer-fronts, table tops and work surfaces headed for the recent Bathrooms & Kitchens Expo 2003 held at ExCel (London, UK) in May.

Glaverbel exhibited the Lacobel range, particularly well suited to current design trends. Lacobel is a glass varnished on one side with a high-quality paint. This special process makes the glass less vulnerable to staining and scratching ensuring a resistant surface with a consistent appearance over time.

Lacobel is available in 15 colours. Glistening hues like 'Marine', 'Cherry' and 'Sunshine' are part of the range, as are metallic versions and modern pastels, such as 'Steel Grey', 'Soft Blue', 'Sky', 'Orchard' and 'Spring'. The glass produces a sensation of depth and clarity, gleams in every colour of the rainbow and changes colour in the play of the light.

This varnished glass can be cut, shaped, bevelled and sandblasted. It is UV and heat resistant and claims not to degrade or fade.

Glaverbel also offers a safety version of its Lacobel ranges. In the safety version, a special film is applied to the varnished side (back) of the glass so that if the glass is broken, the shards stick to the film, preventing injury.

A brochure is available from the company and applications can be viewed on Glaverbel's website http://www.myglaverbel.com

Bill O'Reilly Captivates Crowd at K/BIS

Owned by the National Kitchen & Bath Association, the Kitchen/Bath Industry Show & Conference (K/BIS), held April 10-13, 2003, began in grand fashion with keynote speaker Bill O'Reilly, host of The O'Reilly Factor on the Fox News Channel, addressing a crowd of more than 1,500 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

K/BIS continues to set the standard for the kitchen and bathroom industry, as a crowd of more than 52,000 gathered to view a record, 785 exhibits at the four-day event.

As host of cable TV's fastest-growing and most watched news programme, O'Reilly treated the crowd to a live version of his nightly programme as he spoke about, what else, but War in Iraq, boycotting France, supporting coalition troops, the U.S. economy, the role of the media and politics. He also answered questions from the audience.

Although sometimes controversial, the audience was very pleased with the presentation, as some attendees called it, 'Very entertaining,' 'Excellent, definitely a 'do over,' ' 'Fantastic,' and 'Stimulating.'

Said attendee David McNalty, CKD, of Park Ridge, Illinois, 'The question and answer was fantastic. ... He came to the table with some intelligent ideas. He felt like this country is in great shape, and I agree. ... He talked about life as a whole. His thrust was to discuss the reality of our situation, and he hit the nail on the head with the big picture.'

K/BIS Shows Another Year of Record Growth

The Kitchen/Bath Industry Show & Conference continues to set the standard for the kitchen and bathroom industry, as a crowd of more than 52,000 gathered to view a record 785 exhibits at the Orange County Convention Centre in Orlando, Florida, on April 10-13, 2003.

Attendance exceeded all expectations for the National Kitchen & Bath Association during its 40th Anniversary, as the crowds grew by 44 percent as compared to the previous attendance high for Orlando, when 36,000 converged in 2001. The 2003 event was down 7 percent from the show-record 55,944 that hit Chicago in 2002, but there were more than 200 additional exhibits this year, as compared to Chicago.

'Not only is the show bigger and better each year but I think the real measure of success is that it is more meaningful to all the participants,' said 2003 NKBA President-Elect Beverly Dalton. 'The exhibitors have an opportunity to talk with buyers, designers have an opportunity to see and to touch the latest and best in all product categories and all of our different industry member segment events were enormously successful this year.'

To say K/BIS is already gaining momentum for next spring would be an understatement. By the time the doors closed in Orlando, 85 percent of exhibitors signed on to participate at McCormick Place in Chicago, where K/BIS returns on April 1-4, 2004.

'American Standard is always pleased with the quality and variety of attendees that K/BIS attracts,' said Jeannette Long, director of marketing communications for American Standard. 'We have used K/BIS in our marketing mix for many years as a major launch event for new products.'

Said Charlie McTargett, senior director of brand marketing for Delta Faucet Company, 'K/BIS is a pillar of our customer outreach activities; in fact, we exceeded our goal for customer leads - a record. K/BIS provides a unique opportunity for our products to be displayed in functioning suites. Customers loved being able to get hands-on with our new products. ..'

According to Walt Goldsby of VNU Expositions, the Association's partner in producing K/BIS, the show is capitalising on the health of the kitchen and bath industry, and as the number of exhibitors and attendees increase, so does the quality of our show.

'The products I've seen introduced at the show this year have been more intellectual and consumer oriented,' said attendee Denise Paul of Southern Accents. 'Consumers want to recognise a manufacturer that considered or anticipated their needs before they did. For example, U-line's double-door fridge with movable compartments.'

The conference portion of K/BIS was also well attended, and was highlighted by keynote speakers Tony Christiansen, David Kohler and Bill O'Reilly.

The conference offered four, jam-packed NKBA University courses and more than 30 seminars, including a full track presented by the National Association of the Remodelling Industry (NARI). This was the first-time partnership between NKBA and NARI to enhance the conference.

'Bringing more remodellers into the sessions, not just targeting the showroom people helps expand for the customer,' said attendee Lynne Stephenson of Hub Remodelling in Villanova, Pa. 'The show is very easy to get around and to find what you need. Technology is our focus this year and there is a lot more than there has been before.'

Adds Jim Krengel, CMKBD, of Kitchens by Krengel in Saint Paul, Minn., 'NKBA has been a great springboard for information, as it allows the ability to share information with others through networking with other association members.'

If you missed the education summit at K/BIS, you don't have to wait till next spring. NKBA will partner with Kitchen & Bath Business magazine for the second annual Kitchen/Bath West Conference on September 4-6, 2003, in Los Angeles at the Century Plaza Hotel & Spa.

Design Idea Centre projects draw crowds to NKBA booth
The two Design Idea Centre structures housed in the NKBA booth also took centre stage in Orlando.

One DIC structure, sponsored by Woman's Day Specials Kitchens & Baths, paired John Troxell, design director of Wood-Mode, Inc., and John A. Buscarello, ASID, to produce a cutting-edge design that included a family kitchen, a master bath, a powder room and a patio cooking area.

The kitchen, with stainless steel appliances set into cabinets in two finishes recalling the Arts and Crafts period, included multiple work and lounging areas, plus a wet-bar setup, a gas fireplace and a built-in TV.

A stainless steel grill and ice maker/refrigerator were built into a custom-made unit designed for outdoor use. The stainless steel sink and nickel faucet as well as the porcelain tile counter and backsplash are also weatherproof.

'All these elements are contained in what appears to be a structure made of formed concrete,' said Troxell. 'That is the look we wanted; we actually achieved it with plywood and a stucco-type paint, then added the cedar shelving. Our solution works well in a temperate climate like Florida's.'

The master bath could have been called a personal spa. Spaces flowed together, but there were specific zones for the shower, with its sun-dappled, tinted acrylic block walls; for the tub, which faces a small arched fireplace and a flat screen TV; and for a dressing table backed by a two-tone partition that also defined a privacy zone for the toilet.

Sponsored by NKBA, the second DIC structure of 1,800 square feet contained four rooms divided into equal quadrants. The four rooms included an indoor/outdoor living space; an elegantly tiled bathroom; a colourful and playful children's entertainment space; and a gourmet kitchen reflecting the Rockies and the Adirondacks.

'The new format of the Design Idea Centre was a great success,' said Karen Walden, designer of the children's playroom. 'Because of scaled back dimensions and the freedom to design any kind of space, project managers were able to create four very distinct rooms providing a visual treat for all who passed through.

'With a kitchen, a bath, an outdoor terrace, and a playroom on display, attendees had the opportunity to see new designs and application of products first hand and then take away free product packets that described what they'd seen.'

The projects also give designers thoughts on how they might tweak or elevate their own designs.

'The rooms themselves were excellent,' said Rebecca Brown, CKD, of Hyannis, Mass., of the Design Idea Centre. 'This year, I liked the ideas in the various rooms. There were some neat ideas - especially in the playroom and the way they used the grab bars on the bed. ... The stainless steel, lazy Susan on the island in the kitchen was unique.'

Also drawing crowds in the NKBA booth on the Saturday, Norm Abram from This Old House signed autographs, and radio host Andrea Ridout of the Ask Andrea Radio Show broadcast her first nationally syndicated programme live from the Association's booth.

Final Report ISH 2003 'More Determined than Ever' - ISH 2003 as Solid as a Rock

* 'More determined than ever'- ISH 2003 as solid as a rock

* One in four visitors from outside Germany

* Expectations exceeded despite difficult economic situation

'We are more determined than ever – for us, the only way is forward.' This is the optimistic way exhibitors and visitors described ISH 2003. 2,361 exhibitors from 51 countries presented their innovations on 254,000 square metres of exhibition space at the International Trade Fair for Building and Energy Technology and The Bathroom Experience (25th to 29th March 2003).

The proportion of foreign trade visitors rose from 20 to almost 25 percent. The number of German visitors, however, fell. Although all decision makers attended the ISH, there were fewer employees per company than in the past. Altogether, just under 180,000 trade visitors from 93 nations made their way to Frankfurt. This, the result of the difficult economic climate, is just under eight percent less than at the last event.

Nevertheless, around 78 percent of exhibitors and 95 percent of visitors said they had achieved their goals for the fair and are satisfied with ISH 2003.

Dr. Michael Peters, Member of the Board of Management of Messe Frankfurt: 'The power of a genuine leading trade fair becomes apparent when the economic climate is stormy. ISH 2003 was as solid as a rock for the sector. Particularly encouraging for us is the significance of the fair for the worldwide sector. The high degree of internationality on both the exhibitor and visitor sides is our strength in Frankfurt. The ISH has the right concept.'

The return of air-conditioning to the ISH was a success and the level of exhibitor satisfaction in this segment above average. More renowned companies have already said they will be taking part in ISH 2005.

The representatives of the associations supporting the ISH took a similar view of the results of the fair. Michael von Bock und Polach, General Manager of the German Sanitation, Heating and Air Conditioning Association (Zentralverband Sanitär, Heizung, Klima - ZVSHK), said, 'The mood on the exhibition stands was extremely positive. Everybody wants to be ready for when the upturn comes. The high level of visitor expertise compensated for the decline in the number of visitors. All trade visitors were very well prepared and up-to-the-minute in terms of technical innovations. This shows that the vast majority of fitters have developed into building and energy technicians. In the future, the subject of cooling for buildings will have a major role to play.'

Horst Eisenbeis, General Manager of the Association of the German Central Heating Association (Vereinigung der deutschen Zentralheizungswirtschaft): 'ISH 2003 has given an impressive demonstration of its position as the leading international trade fair for house and building technology. The dominant trend in our segment is system technology with variable and modular components.'

Jens Wischmann, General Manager of the Association of the German Sanitation Industry (Vereinigung der Deutschen Sanitärwirtschaft e.V. – VDS): 'The mood was good despite the situation in the sector. Many exhibitors were able to conclude transactions at the fair and are expecting some good post-fair business. The visitors were well qualified and interested in high-grade products. The export-oriented companies of the sanitation industry were extremely pleased with the large number of foreign visitors.'

According to Dr. Peters, ISH 2003 shows clearly where the growth markets of the future are. There was, for example, a considerable increase in the number of visitors from East European countries, such as Russia, Slovakia, Latvia, Serbia / Montenegro, Bulgaria and Turkey. However, significant increases were also registered in the number of visitors from West European countries such as Spain, Great Britain, Austria and Scandinavia. Overseas regions, such as Southeast Asia and South America, were also better represented than two years ago. Contrary to the trend on the first two days, the total number of US visitors declined slightly. After Germany, the ten biggest visitors nations are Italy, The Netherlands, France, Belgium with Luxembourg, Great Britain, Switzerland with Liechtenstein, Austria, the Czech Republic, Sweden and Poland.

The next ISH will be held in Frankfurt am Main from 15th to 19th March 2005.

ISH North America – International Trade Fair for Kitchen & Bath, Plumbing, PVF, Heating and Air-Conditioning – will be held in Las Vegas, USA, from 1st to 3rd October 2003.

ISH China – International Trade Fair for Sanitation, Heating, Air-Conditioning, Bath & Kitchen – will be held in Beijing from 14th to 17th September 2004.

Luxury Show Set for NY and Vegas in ’03

Luxury Kitchen and Bath Collection organisers have announced that they will be conducting two events in 2003, aimed at meeting the trade show and educational needs of the high-end kitchen and bath market.

Las Vegas will host the spring edition of the event in June, while the Metropolitan Pavilion in New York will host the event in November, announced the Davis Peterson Collaborative, the Dallas-based organisers of the luxury market event.

'We’ve determined that the New York location would serve as a primary market for the event given its demographic mixture of top designers, architects, showroom owners, and kitchen and bath dealers,' said Davis Peterson Collaborative partner Todd Davis.

'Manufacturers of high end product have wholeheartedly endorsed New York, since it’s considered by many to be the key market in the industry,' Davis observed.
Given the fact that the event may remain in New York for the foreseeable future, organisers wanted to secure the event’s position within the Western market, and have selected Las Vegas for the first edition, Davis added.

The Luxury Kitchen and Bath Collection was launched in 2001 by Davis and his partner, Alan Peterson – both of whom had previously been closely connected with the Kitchen/Bath Industry Industry Show (K/BIS).

'Our intention to have two events in 2003 stems from the regional nature of the attendance,' Davis commented. 'We believe that two events can adequately serve the market without saturating it.'

'We are sensitive to manufacturers’ time and their expenses, but those who currently participate in the event know that we are committed to their goals and will continue to limit the amount of space offered, carefully watch their costs, and invest in the event by continuing to offer a unique event that assists our exhibitors and sponsors to sell more products,' he added

According to Peterson, the event and trade show industry is undergoing change.
Said Peterson: 'Manufacturers are interested in gaining brand awareness and exposure to key buyers in a networking setting. We are essentially providing a corporate event complete with education, special events and key product displays for niche manufacturers in this marketplace.

'By holding two events in key U.S. markets, Luxury Kitchen and Bath will continue to meet the goals of its mutual customers . . . the high-end specifiers of unique products and those who provide those products.'
