A Week of Designer Ceramics

This week saw a major Tile Collection launch from UK manufacturer BCT, who has secured the services of Red or Dead Design Team Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway to produce The Wet Range, a fresh and contemporary range which is already being rolled out in more than 190 outlets including Focus and Topps. The well attended launch took place at the trendy London hang-out Grouchos.

In his introduction, Wayne spoke passionately about the latest focus of his design talents, namely mass market housing. Having attracted the attention of George Wimpey by criticising the lack of imagination shown by entry level housebuilders, Wimpey invited him to a meeting which has led to various projects around the UK, and around 5,000 houses now have been built under the design brief of the Hemingway team. Wayne's passion is to bring a sense of community back to housing developments, with usable play areas, shared facilities etc, a worthy ambition which we wholeheartedly endorse.

Also this week, Turkish ceramics company VitrA - which has 5% of the UK market, but wants 10% by 2010 - invited the press to its annual 'State of the Bathroom Nation' address in the luxurious surroundings of the Bentley Kempinsky Hotel in London, where we were informed of the company's plans to build a new factory in Russia, to add to the ten it already has worldwide, including the world's biggest sanitaryware plant in Turkey. Upcoming launches include the Istanbul Collection by Ross Lovegrove, plus a range of furniture including innovative storage solutions and lighting.
