Joined up Thinking

Congratulations to student designer Ines Sanchez Calatrava, from Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication, one of two students whose designs were recognised as winners in the Ideal Standard Designers’ Award, which was looking for innovative approaches to express the value of water.

A prize of £3,000 was awarded for the winner’s novel concept design of a back to back toilet and basin, complete with water recycling facility enabling water from the wash basin to be used directly for the toilet flush. As a modular unit, it allows for mixing and matching with complementary suites from a range, whilst a rear-based servicing panel allows access to fittings.

Since the toilet and wash basin are combined in one unit, pipe work currently used in domestic bathrooms and public toilets is simplified, whilst maintenance and cleaning is straightforward.

Congratulations to Ideal Standard as well, for initiating a design competition with a functional design brief. It means something potentially useful has been created instead of the flights of fancy often associated with such competitions.
