OFT Avoids The Christmas Rush
'Too little too late' is our verdict on the OFT Competition Commission 'Advice Document' on Extended Warranties on Domestic Electrical Goods finally submitted to the Secretary of State yesterday. One would have thought that - after nearly 18 months of deliberation - the Commission may have made a bit more of an effort to make its findings public a little less closer to Christmas, when more of these rip-off warranties are foisted on consumers than at any other time of the year.

Twyfords Advert

Even worse, the findings may not be sufficiently in the public domain by the time another swathe of unsuspecting punters gets conned in the January sales. The Advice Document make pretty damning reading too - 'a complex monopoly exists (which) is engaged in practices which operate against the public interest', and 'prices from the five largest retailers would have been up to a third lower if profits on extended warranties had been in line with the cost of capital' are just a couple of examples.

While being able to offer finance in general has been a boon in the retail arena, the warranty market has been an iniquitous burden on the consumer which can only have had a negative effect. The OFT is to be applauded on recognising this, but it should have applied a bit more urgency than the 'routine' notation the document appears to have.

Is it OK to Drink the Water?
As a kitchen supplier/installer I often fit ion exchange water softeners with the associated hard water filter for drinking to satisfy the water bylaw. Yet any water softener manufacturer will say it is perfectly fine to drink the softened water, as the sodium levels are so low. (it makes a better cup of tea etc etc). What should we be saying to customers?
