A new report from BSRIA suggests that the Chinese domestic market for refrigeration appliances is saturated, with manufacturers actively seeking export markets to soak up their overcapacity. At the moment, the main overseas markets for Chinese fridge manufacturers are North America and the Middle and Far East, but Europe must be next on the list.

The prospect of being swamped with aggressively priced appliances from China will send a shudder down a few spines in a market which is already under seige from American products. Competition from emerging economies has often brought up issues of copyright and design patents and the boffins will no doubt be scrutinising every nut and bolt of imported products.

DebbieInterestingly, the Swedish Electrolux Group has just had to fork out $30m to British inventor John North over claims that his design rights were wrongly used. Despite the payment, Electrolux still maintains that there was no merit in his claim, however.

Chinese Domestic Refrigeration Market Saturated: Manufacturers Seek Export Markets to Soak up Overcapacity
The Chinese refrigeration market is already colossal at $1.8 billion with growth of between 5% and 8% per annum in all sectors apart from domestic which is nearly at saturation. Chinese manufacturers of domestic compressors have a local market of 13.2 million and a capacity of over 30 million, and like manufacturers of evaporators and fridges manufacturers are looking for export opportunities to solve the overcapacity problem.
