A Tonic in Design from Ideal-Standard

Part of the Art, Design and Sculpture 2004 collection and showcased at this year’s 100% Design, Tonic is a modern, comprehensive collection from Ideal-Standard. The simple design of the Tonic suite makes it highly versatile and appealing to a wide range of tastes and requirements.

The Tonic basin (above) is available in three sizes, 60cm, 65cm and the more compact 50cm handrinse basin.

The crisp design of the Tonic wall-hung WC and bidet brings a new design dimension to the suite providing a clean and completely contemporary look for the bathroom.

A stylish range of matching furniture is also available to accompany the Tonic suite.

IQ, meanwhile, (right) brings a new design dimension to Ideal-Standard with the introduction of single and double bowl basins at the 100% Design exhibition.

Three basin models are available from the IQ range. The 130 x 52cm double bowl basin instantly offers a luxury look and a focal point in the bathroom or washroom.

Equally as luxurious are the single bowl basins available in two sizes – 80 x 52 cm and 70 x 52cm.

To add to the design impact, all IQ basins can be fitted onto a modern furniture station that brings complimentary materials and storage possibilities into the mix.

Finally, Celia is a classic-modern suite from Ideal-Standard, a design that works perfectly when fitted into its own furniture ranges and equally well as free-standing pieces.

Designers can use the Celia furniture to provide material contrasts together with practical storage.

A key focal point of the Celia suite is the Idealcast bath; at a generous 185 x 100cm the freestanding bath is mounted in a wooden cradle.

Celia washbasins can be wall-mounted with or without semi-pedestals and are available in three sizes – 60cm, 65cm and the 50cm handrinse basin – all featuring the large bowl with a generously proportioned outer rim.

100% Design also saw the showcase of Glance, a new range of contemporary bathroom brassware from Jado. Designed by Artefakt Industriekultur, the brief for Glance was to create a product that offers a completely different ‘look’ to existing modern brassware on the market.

Jado Glance Bath and Shower Mixer with 'joystick' handle

A focal point of the Glance range is the ‘joystick’ handle. The joystick adds simple form to precise control of water temperature and flow using the latest in ceramic disc technology. The geometric line of the spout offers an intriguing alternative to the minimalist shapes that have become so prevalent in the designer brassware market .
Options available from the Glance range include a basin mixer, three-hole basin mixer, bidet mixer, a three tap-hole bath/shower mixer and a built-in bath/shower mixer.

Ideal-Standard Supports Young Graduates at 100% Design

This year at 100% Design, in addition to showcasing some of the 2004 products, Ideal-Standard hosted a 'Design Room' exhibition of design graduates' work.

Graduate designer, Keigo Harada (pictured), who studied at Ravensbourne College of Design and Communication, was one of two designers whose designs were recognised as winners at the recent RSA student design awards, sponsored by Ideal-Standard. For his design of an enclosure-less shower, Keigo was presented with a prize of £1,000 and a summer's placement with a high quality furniture manufacturer.

Ideal-Standard's UK design director Robin Levien recently took Keigo with him to Venice to take part in a European design symposium on showers organised by the company. The trip resulted in a decision to complete a prototype of Keigo's design, which will be illustrated in the Ideal-Standard 100% Design Room in September.

Other projects to be displayed in the design room include a basin that embraces new technology from Anna Dabrowski, a unisex toilet from Eve Stirling, and a shower valve from Alastair Jewsbury of Hallam University in Sheffield. Alastair and Anna are both working on further development of their designs at Studio Levien in London.

lnteriors by Dornbracht at 100% Design

Dornbracht, the international manufacturer of design fittings, accessories and interiors, exhibited its Interiors range at 100% Design, which included designs by Rodolfo Dordoni, Jean-Marie Massaud, Christophe Pillet, Claudio Silvestrin and Torsten Neeland.

Every design is the personal expression of the ideas and style of its creator, representing his interpretation of styling for the home and bathroom. Among the latest lnteriors items the stylistic elegance of Rodolfo Dordoni is set off against the essential architecture in the designs of Claudio Silvestrin, and the lightness and light in the work of Jean-Marie Massaud contrasts with a riot of colour from Christophe Pillet.

Rodolfo Dordoni has created for the bathroom the wall-mounted SL 120. This revolves around a vertical glass crosspiece with moulded shelving on which items such as a mirror, aluminium shelf, lamp and medicine cabinet can be varied in position as required by the user.

For his bathroom Jean-Marie Massaud came up with a light and airy concept, highlighted by the use of transparent coloured acrylic. The iconic 'Wave', a chaise longue made of vibrant orange coloured acrylic (pictured), seems to hover above the ground on its delicate tubular framework.

Christophe Pillet also employs colour to great effect in the bathroom. His Space Bar wall cabinets in acrylic glass on an aluminium base can be fixed both horizontally and vertically and through their red and blue colours provide striking visual contrast with more frequently used monochrome fittings.

Minimalist elegance characterises Monolith by Claudio Silvestrin. The designer has created his purist bathroom from two massive monolithic panels which are joined by a long stainless steel rail holding them in position. This rail also functions as a towel holder. The first panel of Monolith, which is made of ebony and measures 225 cm in height and 45 cm in width, includes a number of closed compartments at the top, while a folding seat can be found at the bottom. The second panel is fully glazed with mirror glass. Silvestrin's design bears witness to his architectural style.

At Dornbracht's stand visitors also saw items from the first 'lnteriors' collection: an eclectic assortment of individual pieces. In particular 'Cross Over' by Torsten Neeland, was highlighted. A sleek, minimal bath shelf, Cross Over was a winner in the 'Best Item' category at the 'interior innovation award cologne' 2003. The prize was awarded for the first time at the lnternational Furniture Trade Fair Cologne 2003 by Koln Messe and the German Design Council. It acknowledges new ideas and products in the field of furniture and interior design, and is given primarily for new systems and detail solutions and the innovative use of materials.

A New Name in Fused Glass Tiles

Rupert Scott is a new name in glass design, specialising in the design and production of kiln-fused glass, developed into a unique range of hand-made wall tiles.

Husband and wife team, Steve and Hannah Robinson run the company. The tiles are all designed by Steve, and made individually to order by hand, at the Shropshire studio.

'We aim to be at the ‘cutting edge’ of glass design – to create classics of the future, and become the standard by which other products are judged. Our design process never stops, as we continually seek to make improvements and develop new ideas.

Our passion is not just for glass, but for individuality. We want to provide an alternative to the mass-produced item. When you consider how much time you spend in your kitchen and bathroom, wouldn’t you rather have something on your walls that really excites you? We think of each tile we make as an individual piece of art, and we want our customers to get as much pleasure from our products as we do creating them.'
