Aqualux Hits All Time High

Aqualux's new look website is proving to be a big hit with customers with visits to http://www.aqualux.co.uk doubling since the launch of over 100 new products at the Bathroom and Kitchen Expo in May.

Label Scheme Website goes Live

On 1st September 2007, the Bathroom Manufacturers Association (BMA) Water Efficient Product Labelling Scheme website at http://www.water-efficiencylabel.org.uk went live offering the Bathroom Industry another new innovative service.

The Scheme aims to help both trade and consumers easily identify water efficient products that when installed and used correctly use less water.

Clever use of smart technology in stunning designs means we can do our bit to stamp out waste without compromising on style. Manufacturers are working hard to ensure they help Government meet its water saving targets, whilst still delivering the sexy looking performance packed bathing experience consumers crave.

The website provides a plethora of information supporting the Scheme, including the criteria for qualification, database of registered product, practical water saving tips and hints and all registration documentation.

The BMA decided to launch the world's first industry-led water efficiency labelling scheme back in December 2006 following the release of the DCLG and Defra Water Efficiency in New Buildings consultation document which contains proposals for new homes, extensive renovations and new commercial buildings in England and Wales. Since then, Industry experts have been hard at work to produce the Scheme and define the qualifying criteria.

The BMA Scheme, in addition to facilitating easy identification of water efficient bathroom products, will aid Government in its quest to reduce water consumption per capita from 150 litres per day to 125 litres per day.

Speaking about the launch of the Scheme and the new website Yvonne Orgill Chief Executive of the BMA says: ‘We have spent many hours with our members working on the Scheme to get it just right.

‘We believe we have developed a credible Scheme with clout. The response from Industry and Government confirms this. The Scheme has been very positively received by Waterwise, Water UK and Defra.

‘But it doesn't stop there. We still have work to do and are putting together a consumer campaign because we need to change behaviour and educate the consumer to achieve the desired result.

‘It's important that consumers understand that the key to water efficiency is reducing waste, not restricting use.’

The Scheme is voluntary and open to all companies that sell water efficient products into the UK market and which meet the Scheme's criteria for volumes and flow rates.

Watch out for the label on product itself, the product packaging, point of sale literature or within the company's own product literature from September onwards, with a full press launch later in the year.

Chesterfield 'Plumbing and Heating Engineer' Fined £3,000

Philip Goodman (62), a self-employed plumbing and heating engineer, was fined £3,000 at Chesterfield Magistrates' Court on Monday 3rd September for working on gas appliances without being registered with the Council of Registered Gas Installers (CORGI).

The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) prosecution came after the investigation of complaints relating to work Goodman had carried out at four separate addresses. The installations at two addresses were evaluated by CORGI Inspectors whilst the other two addresses were notified to the HSE by properly qualified and CORGI registered gas installers.

At three of the four addresses, gas appliances that had been worked on by Mr Goodman were found to be 'immediately dangerous' or 'at risk'. At one address he used a fictitious CORGI registration number on the gas safety certificate paperwork where he had 'certified' the gas boiler as safe for continued use. A valid certificate was needed by the homeowner as she operates from the house as a registered childminder. The boiler was later found to be immediately dangerous.

Philip Goodman, previously of Glapwell, but now residing in Stockton on Tees, pleaded guilty to six contraventions of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998. He was fined £500 for each of the six offences and ordered to pay costs of £2,700.

The offences committed by Mr Goodman were as follows, that:

- between 1st July 2003 and 31st July 2003 at a property in Hempshill Vale, Nottingham, he serviced a gas fire without being CORGI registered and the fire was left with the operating pressure dangerously high, contrary to Regulations 3(3) and 26(9) of the Gas safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998.

- on 10th June 2003 at a second property in Hempshill Vale, he pretended to be CORGI registered, contrary to Regulation 3(7) of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998.

- Between 1st September 2002 and 31st October 2002, at a property in Glapwell, Chesterfield, he installed a gas fire and boiler without being CORGI registered, and the fire and gas pipework were installed in an unsafe condition, contrary to Regulations 3(3), 19 (2)(b) and 26(1) of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998.

HSE inspector Kevin Wilson said:

'Every year about 20 people die from carbon monoxide poisoning as a result of faulty gas fires, central heating boilers, cookers, and other appliances. The law requires that only trained, competent people work on gas appliances, and at the present time, the only qualification recognised by HSE is membership of CORGI. This prosecution clearly shows the penalties faced by people who work on gas appliances in the absence of a CORGI registration.

'Mr Goodman was previously summonsed to answer the charges in 2005, but he failed to appear and has evaded justice for over two years. These were serious offences following which numbers of people were put at serious risk. Mr. Goodman had been previously warned not to carry out work on gas appliances unless he was registered with CORGI. He failed to heed this warning and has now been brought before the Court to answer the charges against him.'

It is recommended by HSE that homeowners ensure that gas appliances are tested annually by a qualified, CORGI-registered gas fitter. In addition, people should always ask tradesmen to demonstrate that they are registered with CORGI, and hold the appropriate qualifications before allowing them to work on their gas appliances.

Early symptoms of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning are easily mistaken for 'flu'. Tell-tale signs include tiredness, drowsiness, headaches, pains in the chest and stomach, and lethargy. If you suspect that you or any of your family have been exposed to CO, then seek medical help immediately. Tell your GP you think these symptoms may be related to CO exposure: they will be able to tell by means of a blood test.

To find a Corgi-registered gas installer visit Corgi's website at: http://www.corgi-gas-safety.com or call 0870 401 2300.

In addition, on 26th July 2007, Wolseley France signed an agreement conditional upon obtaining French competition clearance, to acquire Sofiparts SAS ('Sofiparts') and its subsidiary companies from SAS Savare. Sofiparts designs, engineers and assembles roof trusses operating from nineteen production sites across France. In the year ended 31st December 2006, Sofiparts had revenue of Euro121.4 million (£81.5 million) and gross assets of Euro36.6 million (£24.5 million) at that date. Completion of this acquisition is expected in November 2007. The conditional acquisition of Sofiparts is in line with Wolseley France's strategy to move into the truss assembly market and further increase its presence in the new residential sector.

Chip Hornsby, Group Chief Executive of Wolseley said:

'These acquisitions build on our strategy of profitable growth through acquisitions and organic means and provide increased diversity to the Group's product range. For the culinary enthusiast, the Spira has a contemporary design that is both durable and reliable and solves the problem of cleaning unreachable areas by combining a mixer tap with a pull out.

For bathrooms
The bathroom ranges combine basin taps (pair), bath taps (pair), mono basin mixers, bath fillers and bath shower mixers. The 1/4-turn operation is another feature of the Cubico cube style mixer with its' high tech surface finish, as well as the cube style Angolo mixer, the cross-handled Aria, the Elevare, and the elegantly shaped Luna with its' distinctive design. Sophisticated column style taps are also available in the form of the Avanti which has been crafted to perfection with a smooth feel to the hand and easy action through 1/4-turn ceramic disc technology.

New Environmentally Friendly Urinal Hygiene Service

Enviro-Fresh, Rentokil Initial’s expert provider of effective and environmentally friendly washroom solutions, has launches a new water saving, urinal hygiene service in the UK.

Responding to opportunities provided by increased environmental concerns and cleanliness standards, eco-clear is a urinal service that delivers exceptional standards of hygiene.

In addition to delivering savings on maintenance and operating costs, eco-clear can also save companies significant amounts of money in water usage. By employing eco-clear, a typical company, with over 2,000 males using urinal facilities, could save the equivalent of 840 Olympic-size swimming pools of water each year.

Mark Gillespie, Managing Director, Enviro-Fresh, comments: 'If you consider that just one urinal with a nine litre cistern flushing every 15 minutes can use over 315,000 litres of water per year and cost the average business up to £700 in water charges, UK plc is literally throwing money down the drain. Not only does it waste one of the earth’s increasingly precious resources, but corporate water charges mean that it’s a problem that businesses can no longer afford to ignore.'

eco-clear uses innovative products to regulate water flow to the urinal, whilst at the same time combating the problems associated with reduced water, such as the build up of uric acid, salts and scale that can cause unpleasant odours and blockages.

The timed water management device, which is approved by Defra, controls the flow of water to the cistern, reducing flushing to between four and eight times per day.

Enviro-Fresh’s patented sleeve (Sani-Sleeve) uses bio-enzymes (‘good bacteria’) to penetrate uric acid, salts and scale and the sleeve’s patented odour-lock design traps smells below the water line to stop them from entering the washroom. The sleeve’s specially designed cap also prevents blockages caused by the accumulation of foreign matter falling into the waste trap. A special eco-clear cleaning solution is also supplied to remove the need to use harmful cleaning chemicals on a daily basis.

Specially trained eco-clear service technicians then ensure optimum performance of the products with specialist servicing and maintenance each quarter, including the replacement of Sani-Sleeves.

Gillespie continues: 'The service offered by eco-clear ensures that businesses can both save money and be confident that their urinals are visitor-ready at all times of the day in a clean, hygienic and pleasant smelling state. By offering flexible service plans, we pride ourselves on ensuring the needs of clients can be met whatever their circumstances or business type.'

Enviro-Fresh is initially launching eco-clear in the UK, Australia, South Africa and Ireland. More details can be found on the newly launched website http://www.enviro-fresh.com which provides an overview of the entire service offering. Additional eco-clear roll-outs to other countries are planned between now and the end of the year.
