AMDEA wins BSI's first industry leader award

* AMDEA-BSI-award-2016.jpgThe Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances has been recognised by the British Standards Institution for leading the way in establishing key production standards in the UK and wider world. AMDEA won the BSI Industry Leadership Award last Thursday November at a prestigious ceremony in London, becoming the very first recipient of this new honour.

This significant achievement acknowledges AMDEA's major role in the development of safety, performance and environmental standards. As well as its strong representation on 53 BSI committees, the trade association is a front-runner in international standardisation, at IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) and CENELEC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization).

AMDEA ensures that the UK plays a pivotal role in improving the international standards of domestic appliances by providing delegates who assiduously pursue best practice. Its formidable technical team includes Stuart MacConnacher, 2015's winner of BSI's International Standards Maker Award.

The BSI citation notes that on many occasions, AMDEA has led its members in ad-hoc working groups with consumer representatives, BEIS, the London Fire Brigade and other stakeholders to scrutinise issues and identify solutions through amendments to manufacturing standards.

Simon Grantham, AMDEA's chairman, says of the achievement: "AMDEA is vigorously committed to improving standards in domestic appliances by tirelessly engaging its technical expertise, including that of its members, in the development of international standards.

"This BSI award is testimony to the UK domestic appliance industry's commitment to keep our customers safe, using appliances that offer the highest possible levels of performance and environmental protection."

AMDEA is the UK trade association for manufacturers of large and small domestic appliances; representing over 85% of the domestic appliance industry and nearly 90% of white goods brands. Members' products include most of the UK's top selling brands of major white goods, other large and small kitchen appliances, heating, water heating, floor care, waste disposal and ventilation equipment.

BSI is the UK's national standards body. It represents the UK in the European and international standards bodies.

Register my appliance is the AMDEA safety initiative supported by all members. It aims to improve ownership data on the millions of appliances in use in UK homes, to ensure that they can be found if a safety repair is needed.
