Stoves Community Kitchens winners revealed
The latest winners of a community projects fund, launched by British cooking appliance brand, Stoves, have been revealed.
The £10,000 Stoves Community Kitchens campaign aims to place the kitchen at the heart of local communities and enrich local community projects by helping to transform their cooking facilities. The competition saw applications flood in from across the UK, with more 5,000 votes being cast in the public vote.
The first prize of £5,000 of cooking appliances went to Kentish Town City Farm in Camden, London, which uses a 'field to fork model' to help people living in the city to connect with animals, nature and the environment. Kentish Town City Farm also provides an extensive educational programme to schools, therapeutic riding to people with special needs and farm related activities to local children and families.
Dunbar-based charity, The Ridge's Sunny Soups, which provides free soups to the local community when food budgets are tight, and gives volunteers new life and employment skills, came second, winning £3,000 of appliances and in third place, receiving £2,000 of appliances, was St. Helens-based community project, Ashtons Greens Community Allotments, which supports a number of community initiatives.
"We are beyond thrilled to have won this amazing competition," enthuses Mel Chamberlain, of Kentish Town City Farm. "It's really going to change some fundamental elements in the farm kitchen activities. We run several weekly cookery sessions for local children and families, teaching them the basics of healthy living and where their food comes from.
"Using our current ancient range cooker, it's all guesswork, and quite often goes a bit wrong. With this amazing gift, not only can we replace the oven but other appliances too.
"Christmas has definitely come early. Thank you to Stoves from the bottom of our giant saucepans."
Jane Rylands, of Stoves' parent company, Glen Dimplex Home Appliances, says of the competition: "We fully believe that the heart of the home - and the community - is the kitchen and so we are thrilled to be supporting theses fantastic causes and putting something back into the community."
