NHBC Foundation publication showcases international comparisons of CO2 emissions
As a measure of success, the UK is beyond its target to meet the carbon emissions set out in the Kyoto protocol, according to a new publication by the NHBC Foundation.
Comparing 20 countries around the world, the 2011 edition of the Zero Carbon Compendium aims to create a better understanding of the issues surrounding the delivery of low and zero carbon housing, which is set to play a crucial part in global emission reductions.
Produced in partnership with the Zero Carbon Hub and PRP Architects, the Zero Carbon Compendium 2011 continues the work of the 2009 edition, showcasing new exemplar projects, updates of national targets and further assessment of programmes, Government policy and incentives. It is an international reference work encouraging objective comparisons between countries and a basis for collaboration on approaches and technologies.
The 2011 Compendium includes fivenew countries - Brazil, India, Russia, Singapore and South Africa - and provides a graphical review of the approach to low and zero carbon housing across the globe, summarising seven key lessons learned, including aspirations, energy supply, leadership and technology.
Launching the Compendium at the recent International Housing and Home Warranty Conference in Cape Town, Neil Jefferson, Chief Executive, Zero Carbon Hub, commented:
"The 2009 edition of the Zero Carbon Compendium was well received across the industry, but two years later, a revisit was essential to keep those involved in building new homes to low and zero carbon standards, fully updated of international progress against CO2 targets. Expanding the number of countries featured in the Compendium also gives a more rounded international feel, and I am delighted we were able to include our IHHWC hosts, South Africa, into this new edition.
"Producing the 2011 Compendium has also allowed us to increase its scope, allowing additional comparisons between countries on such topics as energy imports versus exports and energy end uses. For the UK, which at present is facing dual pressures of the economy and 2016's rapidly approaching target, it is encouraging that we are on schedule to meet our emission reduction commitments. However, these efforts must be sustained and learning from other projects around the world is always welcome."

As further information becomes available on additional exemplar projects, these will be published on the Zero Carbon Compendium micro-website. This international resource at www.lowcarbonhomesworldwide.com provides up-to-date content and will become the central point for future developments of the Compendium.
