Mission to reduce Malta's water consumption
The Chartered Institute of Plumbing & Heating Engineering answered a call for help from the Malta College of Arts, Science & Technology recently and is now involved with helping Malta to reduce water consumption.
The country attracts hundreds of thousands of holidaymakers to its shores each year, which may be good for the economy but it is proving a huge drain on its water resources. Malta is in the top 10 of countries with scarce water supplies and to compound the situation the water table has dropped to nearly below sea level. Despite water metering they are fast running out of water.
Kevin Wellman, CEO of the CIPHE attended a meeting organised by MCAST and met with representatives of Malta Chamber Foundation, Malta Business Bureau and consulting engineers. The discussion ranged from creating a register of competent plumbers to developing a case for licensing. They also talked about training and Water Regulations.
"To help get a clearer picture they need to carry out a skills gap analysis," says Kevin Wellman, (pictured). "MCAST has received substantial European funding and this could result in a tenfold overall student intake. It's crucial that the right training is available to provide skilled workers for the future as there are a number of problem areas regarding plumbing that must be tackled."
The CIPHE will be providing technical information and assistance to all the parties involved to help find solutions for their water resource and plumbing problems.
