Brighton & Hove City Council chooses Propelair water-saving loos for historic city gardens

* Propelair.jpgPropelair, the UK designer and manufacturer of the revolutionary 1.5 litre flush toilet, has been selected by the award-winning Brighton & Hove City Council for the historic Royal Pavilion Gardens in Brighton.

Brighton & Hove City Council is trialling the toilets in a bid to save water, cut costs and bring the well used public loos up to date. The environmentally friendly Propelair toilets use 1.5 litres of water, compared with more than nine litres in some of the city's loos. Estimates show that the eight new toilets could save up to 1.6 million litres a year.

The Propelair system combines an air pump with the water cistern, and works when the lid is closed. The combination of air and water means the loo can be flushed more efficiently using a fraction of the water needed in a traditional toilet. The system also improves hygiene by removing 99.9% of germs.
The toilets in Royal Pavilion Gardens were chosen for the installation as they are extremely well used, and fully attended all year round and were in need of replacing. The historic city-centre gardens are hugely popular with local residents, commuters and tourists, so demand for public amenities is high.

Propelair's highly innovative toilet is the result of five years of intensive research, development and independent testing. Designed and manufactured in the UK using patented POWA displaced air technology, Propelair produces a powerful, high-performance flush requiring only 1.5 litres of water instead of the average nine. As a result, less energy is required for water and waste processing, which in turn reduces the toilet's carbon footprint by an average 80%.

As a result of its superior efficiency and reduced water usage Propelair can exceed the requirements of environmental planning tools such as BREEAM, Part G of the Building Regulations and the Code for Sustainable Homes.

"This council is recognised as the top local authority in the country for providing and maintaining our public toilet facilities, and we are constantly looking for new ways to update and improve this service, whilst keeping within our budget restrictions," explains Councillor Ollie Sykes, Deputy Chair of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee.

"These new toilets have the potential to save huge amounts of water, cutting costs, increasing sustainability and improving hygiene."

Garry Moore, CEO of Propelair, adds: "Brighton's commitment to sustainability, money saving and hygiene is clear from their winning overall Loo of the Year in December and it's a pleasure to be working with them and serving the people of Brighton and Hove. We hope to work more closely with Brighton and also look forward to helping other local authorities reduce their costs and carbon footprint while improving hygiene."

Propelair has achieved several milestones since its launch last year and is gaining traction in the B2B building and facilities management markets. The toilet is now installed in prestigious commercial buildings, local authority properties, financial institutions.

The company works the B2B building, construction, plumbing and design sectors to provide public organisations and private companies with a solution that saves water, saves money, improves hygiene and creates design freedom.
