Liverpool footballer Jamie Carragher lent his support to the official opening of a new cookery school in the city which is the first of its kind in the North West. The Can Cook Studio at The Matchworks in Speke has become a reality thanks to Liverpool Primary Care Trust and leading cooking brand Belling.
Belling has partnered with Liverpool PCT and Healthy Schools as part of Five Children & Families Trust's Can Cook initiative to provide state-of-the art facilities for the local community. Working in collaboration with its partners, Belling has helped to create the Can Cook Studio, an accessible and innovative learning environment designed to develop and encourage enjoyment of food and skills that can be taken straight back into the home.
The studio includes a showroom for Belling appliances, available for trainees and families to buy at a reduced cost. In addition, Belling has donated 20 appliances for the cookery stations at the studio.
The Can Cook studio forms part of the PCT's Taste for Health initiative which encourages people to eat healthier food and to prepare more nutritious meals. The 5, 300 sqft site offers a 20 place cookery facility which will be made available to individuals, schools and local community groups.
"We believe that this fantastic new facility will make a real difference to the lives of people across Liverpool," explained Belling's Business Development Director, Colin Gardner, at the launch. "One of our key objectives at Belling is to encourage people to view cooking as a lifestyle choice and equip them for home cooking and the courses held at the studio will help to do just that."
Also at the launch was Gideon Ben-Tovim, Chair of Liverpool PCT, who said: "This unique partnership shows how serious the PCT is taking the issue of healthy eating in the city. It's not about preaching to people to give up their favourite foods but to encourage them to take a more healthy approach to cooking. The studio has been designed to comprise areas that focus on different parts of the food and training experience and also bring the trainees together to share the social benefits of food."
