Exhibitions and Events: LIGNA 2005

Martin T92 a Huge Success at Ligna

Otto Martin, the German engineering firm and designer and manufacturer of high quality woodworking machinery, used the occasion of Ligna 2005 to launch the company’s T92 range of hi-tech throughfeed moulders.

The new T92 moulders were presented in three executions: A six spindle model equipped for joinery and sawmill processes; a six spindle model especially configured for window production; and a seven spindle version which offers total versatility for all types of planing and profiling work. The reaction of visitors centred around the engineering, the versatility of the machines via fast set-up and tooling options and the very flexible controls.

In addition, Martin showed a new development of its successful T45 Contour profile planer - the new version called the T45-25 represented an extra planing depth capacity of 25mm.

Martin also demonstrated its expertise in sliding table dimension saws with the T73, the T73 Classic, the T73 Automatic and the T73 CNC - the latter being a fully automatic and programmable version.

The special T20 spindle shaper with the sliding table T2080 was shown along with three models of the tilting arbor shaper T26, T26 Comfort, T26 DuoControl and T26 CNC.

Ever popular and successful machines on show were the T45 thicknesser and T54 joiner. Also, of course, Martin's perennial T90 4-sided throughfeed planer with the mobile spindle.

Martin machines and technology are sold and supported in the UK and Ireland by Homag U.K. whose engineers are fully trained on all Martin products and the Homag U.K. service division carries a full inventory of parts.

Homag Group Proves Technological World Leadership at Ligna

Continuing to build on the strong underlying principle of achieving ‘Success with a System’ all Homag Group specialist companies showed new and integrated developments that will form the launch of a technology offensive aimed at underpinning the Group’s worldwide market leadership.

There was a range of new and further developments on show with different focus emphasis on each of the Group's three stands in Halls 26, 16 and 17. Live demonstrations were a feature of some machine groups and, for the first time at Ligna, a specially constructed innovation centre offered an insight into the new technologies and processes which the Group says will be setting the processing trends not only for tomorrow's woodworking and plastics industries, but also for woodworking shops of the future.

The Homag Group focussed attention on its ability to offer everything from a single source at all levels. This ranges across the areas of data networking, machine engineering, handling, organisation and logistics and diagnostics and service. The target markets are furniture production (bespoke or volume production), joinery or structural element production, flooring production and construction in the fast growing timber frame sector.

All Homag Group members showed new machines, innovations, developments and integrated systems. Typical of this is the highly successful and versatile Venture group of machines developed by both Homag and Weeke to provide total solutions at every level for in the areas of CNC routing and CNC machining centres. This series of machines allows hi-tech access to operators at all levels from the joinery, shopfitting and furniture sectors. Technical innovations like LED table clamp positioning and multiple tool heads along with fast program set-ups and the opportunity to integrate into workcells ensure that this speciality is a genuine ‘one-stop-shop’.

Homag also showed advances in single and double sided edge processing and sizing as well as in the fast developing field of stationary CNC processing which has been so quickly embraced by the office furniture sector and is now having equal success with panel fabricators and KBB manufacturers.

Weeke also showed its latest gantry configured machining centres for processing nested components and the company’s fast throughfeed and fast set-up multi-spindle drilling machines and throughfeed drilling and point-to-point combinations centres.

Brandt's world leadership in single-sided edgebanding technology is further advanced with the new 500 and 600 series machines which were introduced at Ligna and machines under the Practive banner for craftsmen in Hall 16.

Wide belt sanding specialists Bütfering had a number of new introductions in both Halls including a new multi-head brush sander for three dimensional workpieces.

Holzma, beam saw and panel sizing technology specialist, demonstrated that its superior engineering and systems is available even to entry level users with the HPP 250 on the Practive stand in Hall 16 while on the industrial stand in Hall 26 a new high speed angle plant HKL 380 was shown and a collaboration with Group member Bargstedt is the HBV 380 Robotic which is a complete panel dividing system encompassing a gantry robot capable of economical unmanned operation with automatic, 3-shift operation including feeding, cutting and defined stacking.

Ligmatech presented a new generation throughfeed carcase press - the MDE 150 with automatic carcase recognition and barcode scanning. The company also demonstrated its prowess in packaging lines for furniture components - the new VKF 120 capable of processing 12 cartons per minute and the tried and tested VKV 700. On the Practive stand in Hall 16 the company introduced the MPH 500 press and the ZHR02 Boomerang panel return device for attachment to processing machines like single-sided edgebanders.

Other developments in software and programming were introduced by Schuler Business Solutions and the Weinmann Group member showed the latest developments for the timber frame construction sector.

Bütfering Showed all New Sanding and Finishing at Ligna

The Homag group's sanding machinery specialist Bütfering showed both new machines and interesting developments for all applications of the versatile wide belt sanding discipline.

The company introduced a new brush sanding machine for three dimensional surface workpieces. This is the SBR 413 TBBB with its plate brushing unit and 400mm circular brush for the processing of both flat and profiled panels. It is a heavy duty machine for industrial application and designed for optimum set-up and flexibility. For instance the high speed and easy exchanging of brush strips has received particular design attention.

Bütfering also offered high technology to the entry level end of the market with its SBO 109 K sander - a 950mm sanding width machine with a combination unit /contact roller for calibration as well as a sanding pad for fine finishing of delicate surfaces. ‘This is a machine where the highly attractive price tag belies its superior engineering.’ says the company.

The Bütfering SWO 313 RRF is a new model for solid wood processing which offers a whole series of features: Contact rollers with a diameter of 240mm and an automatic infeed, a constant working height, sanding belt length of 2620mm, infinitely variable feed, vacuum table and cleaning brush - all for a single, inclusive price.

The company also showed a sanding line for one-pass top and bottom sanding in the SCR-U/SCR machine configuration. Each machine has three sanding units (steel contact roller, rubber coated contact roller, sanding pad) for both calibration and final finish of both sides in one pass. This is an industrial application line and the reliability is bolstered with new units, particularly for the bottom sander.

Under the Homag Group's Practive banner for the cabinet shop and smaller operators, Bütfering showed (in Hall 16) its wide belt sanding machine SWO 313 RRF, its brushing machine SBR 413 TBBB and another sanding line.

Hoffmann Demonstrated Expertise at Ligna

Joining technology specialist Hoffmann exhibited its dovetail key jointing system in all its forms and applications at Ligna along with its engineering ability to design and build customised machines and application solutions.

The Hoffmann system is now used worldwide in furniture manufacturing joinery, window and door and also structural areas as well as in specialist applications that require safe, secure and permanent joints between components.

While Hoffmann manufacture a wide range of standard machines - from manual bench top keyway routers to pneumatic stand-alone automats and also high volume combination machines with integrated double mitre cutting – the company is also adept at designing machinery for any special application or specific production requirement. It is this particular ability that it highlighted at Ligna.

As well as new and special machines, the company showed its hand-held keyway router for on-site work and, for the first time at Ligna - the new GH-1 combination machine for the production of cabinet face frames. This machine combines the processes of keyway routing and cutting out of haunch joints by a guillotine into a single unit and process.

As always the stand displayed a host of application examples in terms of constructed workpieces. Many of the machines were demonstrated live.
