Archibald
- Winner of the Bisque/desigboom.com Radical Radiators of the Future Competition
The
Archibald radiator, designed by Leo Salzedo of Italy, was the winning
entry in the 'Radical Radiators of the Future' competition run by Bisque
and the Milan-based internet magazine, designboom.com. A bold, clothes
hanger shape in chrome finish, Archibald was designed to dry clothes and
towels, minimising the need for ironing.

'Archibald
dries clothes and towels perfectly', says Leo Salzedo. 'Due to its intuitive
shape, it helps eliminate creases from garments and as a clothes hanger,
it saves space. It's as useful as a butler helping with the laundry!'
Archibald was selected from over 3000 entries from 88 countries around
the world.
'We were impressed by the simplicity of this design and the balance between
aesthetics and function,' comments Paul Draper, Bisque's Head of Design.
'Archibald has great potential as a towel radiator and we will continue
to develop the design for production, with Leo Salzedo's involvement.'
Leo Salzedo is 30 year old industrial designer from Padua in Italy. He
graduated from the Padua Scuola Italiana Design in 2002 and since then,
he has worked as an industrial designer at the European Industrial Design
Office for Electrolux in Pordenone.

Contemporary
Bathrooms with New Metro from Dimplex
The
new Metro bathroom radiator from Dimplex
adds a sophisticated twist to any bathroom, with contemporary design plus
innovative heating technology for superior performance.
The
stylish Metro features broad, flat-panel rails, soft curved styling and
integrated electronic room temperature and timer controls. It introduces
dry element technology, which means that the radiator not only warms up
three times faster than a conventional wet filled towel rail, but also
provides a 30% faster towel drying time.
As well as improved drying times, the Metro offers enhanced energy efficiency
as the room reaches the required temperature very quickly. Selected models
feature a discreet, integral fan for extra-fast room heating and this
also has a washable filter to ensure a healthy bathroom environment.
The elegant asymmetric design maximises towel hanging capacity, while
the perfectly even heat distribution over the entire surface means there
is no heat stratification or cold spots. And, in contrast to conventional
wet-filled radiators, there is no risk of leaks or corrosion.
The Metro offers all the benefits of electrically heated appliances such
as independent operation from the main heating system for warm/dry towels
year-round, flexible installation as they are not limited by plumbing
availability and 100% efficiency at point of use. What's more, the lightweight
aluminium construction makes for easy installation.
The Metro has a two year guarantee and is available in either 450mm or
550mm width options, with a range of outputs from 0.48 to 1.6kW.

Broughtons
Launches New Range of H2OT Towel Rails and Designer Radiators
Broughtons,
the bathroom division of national distributor Broughton Crangrove Galley
Matrix, has just launched its own range of heated towel rails and designer
radiators under the H2OT brand.
The new H2OT range includes over 20 different models, themed around water
with names such as Flow, Ocean, Steam, Flood etc. The new designs are
finished in contemporary chrome and an exciting new soft black finish
called Anthracite.
Allan Nutter, Commercial Director for the company remarks: H2OT
is an important launch as few can deny the rise in popularity of the heated
towel rail in the last couple of years. H2OT delivers many competitive
advantages for the retailer constantly seeking new additions that deliver
profit and added-value.
He continues: The depth of range is exciting, with many new and
exclusive products in desirable designs and styles. Combined with the
latest finishes and colours, these products will add individuality, imperative
for today's discerning consumer. It is a range that has taken some considerable
investment and we are incredibly excited about the collection. These styles
and designs have previously been confined to the 'designer' premium end
of the market; now they are available to our mainstream customers. It
is a market with a passion for cutting-edge design. The H2OT range brings
retailers affordable new designs, profitably.
The heated towel rail market has inspired amazing contemporary design
that look like a work of art. H2OT emulates this with its hugely impressive
range and is set to satisfy this exciting and rising market, remarks
Chris Honer, Sales Director, Broughtons.
Like the rest of the home, the bathroom is a growing focus and very much
more design-led than ever before. Chris adds: Consumers are simply
more design-savvy and are using accessories to enhance the overall design
of space. The heated towel rail is an essential part of the interior décor
of the bathroom today and H2OT is designed to capture this valuable market.
This range is not only suitable for the bathroom; consider cloakrooms,
en-suites and even the kitchen. Like brassware, there is even a greater
replacement market - much less expensive and disruptive to update a bathroom
with a modern heated towel rail rather than replacing an entire suite.
Chris mentions: This extensive range means retailers can profit
from investing in accessories such as these and they will be a valuable
part of the sale and one that should not be missed.
Competitively priced, available for delivery the next day, H2OT offers
exceptional value.
H2OT is supported with high quality marketing material including a consumer
brochure, which features a black laminated front cover. The brochure is
segmented into three specialist sections:
* Contemporary modern geometric designs - twelve models
* Classic designs - six models
* Traditional - nine towel rails
Finally, the brochure details various valves and radiator thermostats,
followed by model specifications. The majority of the range is supported
with a warranty of up to 5 years'.
Broughtons offers the retailer another competitive collection for
the bathroom, plus access to an even bigger range of the best brands and
products available in the market place today. Everything we stock is delivered
the next day with any mix from our portfolio such as bathroom suites,
kitchen appliances and boilers.
Supported by our new Customer Charter and returns policy, we seek to maintain
the lead in distribution with 'Excellence through Service and Availability',
concludes Allan.
The Broughtons H2OT consumer brochure, and the new Price Book, July edition,
details the new H2OT collection of designer towel rails and designer radiators.
They are available now from Broughton Crangrove Galley Matrix; call the
contact centre 0870 60 60 601 or your Area Sales Manager or email: bcgm.brochures@wolseley.co.uk.

Fortuna
Favours the Brave, According to MHS Radiators
This
is no pipe dream - it's the new Fortuna ultra modern designer radiator
from MHS. Reminiscent of organ pipes
or tubular bells, the cylindrical shapes give a 21st Century slant on
traditional radiator design.
Fortuna's chunky cylinders offer performance in tandem with their good
looks: mid-height, brushed stainless steel vertical tubes are flanked
by columns in a classic symmetrical shape, and the radiator has outputs
of between 1422 and 2093 watts.
Fortuna is suitable for hot water central heating systems and measures
760 mm high with widths of 515, 645 and 775 mm. Prices start at £1,222
for the 760mm x 515 mm size (pictured).
Managing Director, Ian Bradley, commented: 'Radiator design is becoming
increasingly imaginative and dramatic. Whilst some models are designed
to be discreet, others are intended to catch the eye of the beholder and
provide a striking centrepiece to a room, almost like a work of art.
'Radiators manufactured from polished stainless steel have the same appeal
as chrome, but bring added benefits. Stainless steel is a high quality
material, proving to be durable and resistant to corrosion. It is easy
to clean as any blemishes can be effortlessly polished out.'

Temperatures
are Rising at Esher Place
Esher
Place dates back to the 11th Century and the history of the estate provides
a fascinating prelude to the current house. Today, Esher Place is owned
by the Electrical Trades Union, Amicus and is undergoing extensive refurbishment,
part of which is to upgrade the original heating system.
Modelled
on a French chateau and set in eight acres of grounds, Esher Place has
a colourful history which dates back to the Battle of Hastings, 1066.
The mansion house that we now know as Esher Place has been completely
remodelled since its original erection in the days of William of the Conqueror.
In 1953, the Electrical Trades Union (now Amicus the Union), opened Esher
Place as the first British trade union to have its own residential college.
As Amicus wanted to maintain operation during the restoration, it was
decided that the project would be carried out in four phases. Esher Place
comprises of fifty four bedrooms which range from the more functional
rooms to the original principle rooms that still retain the fine mouldings
and lavish marble fireplaces. The bedrooms haven't received any refurbishment
in twenty five years so the multi phase restoration project is an exciting
task for Amicus and its members. Amicus is fully committed to providing
the perfect learning environment for its members whilst also preserving
the history and beauty of Esher Place. Therefore, it is imperative that
the accommodation is comfortable whilst retaining the period features.
One of the main objectives for the restoration of the accommodation was
to install new radiators without disturbing the original heating system,
as Richard Griffiths, General Manager explains:
As part of the restoration project, it was decided to install new
radiators into some of the bedrooms as they could get quite cold in the
winter but we didn't want to disturb the original heating system as it's
over 100 years old. It was imperative that the radiators were in keeping
with the original period features but didn't interfere with the old system.

John
Davy, Associate Director of ABS Consulting; Engineering Services Consultants
for Esher Place, contacted Tuscan Foundry Products who specialise in reproduction
cast iron radiators. Cast iron radiators have been providing an effective
heating solution for over two centuries as well as being used as a popular
decorative feature, especially during the Victorian times.
We decided to use Tuscan Foundry's Victorian cast iron ElectRad
radiators as the bedrooms needed an additional input of heat but it was
essential that the radiators matched the existing period features. The
existing heating system was not suitable for the addition of new radiators
so the ElectRad was perfect enthuses John.
In total, eight ElectRad's were used on phase one with more specified
for future phases, each with varying sections to heat the room according
to its size.
Projects like Esher Place where the installation of a traditional
wet plumbed system is impractical and could damage the existing arrangement,
the ElectRad offers the perfect solution as it requires no pipe work and
can be plugged directly into a standard wall socket, explains Paul
Trace, Managing Director of Tuscan Foundry Products.
Another advantage of using reproduction radiators is the flexibility they
offer as sections can be added or taken away according to the room size
and amount of heat required. The bedrooms at Esher Place vary in size
and as cast iron radiators' output of heat is high it was important that
the right amount of sections were used as their efficiency can be handicapped
by the size of the room by providing too much or too little heat.
Since opening its doors to Amicus members in 1953, Esher Place has
provided a remarkable training and conference centre to thousands of visitors.
Esher Place is a significant part of English heritage and the products
and services used for the restoration project play an important part in
retaining its colourful history and elaborate architecture concludes
Richard Griffiths.
Amicus recognises the importance of preserving the heritage of Esher Place
and the restoration project is due for completion in 2007.
