Kitchen and Bathroom Surfaces November 2007

Microlinen Texture Available on the Carron Phoenix Isis Range

With texture in the home being a trend that looks set to run and run, the Microlinen texture from Carron Phoenix is a good way to add some tactility to the kitchen. The Microlinen texture is available on all four of the premium specification Isis sinks.

The Isis has been manufactured using the very latest in sink manufacturing technology and features a low profile perimeter that sits just 4mm off the worksurface. It achieves an almost seamless finish with the worksurface, re-interpreting a high end design look at a more affordable and accessible price point for the premium mid market.

Microlinen is a finely textured surface with a matt appearance that works well colour-wise with brushed stainless steel appliances. The soft sheen of the metal has appealing low reflective qualities, while being soft to the touch. Compared to standard polished steel it also requires less buffing to keep up smart appearances - ideal for people who like to save time on tedious household chores.

The Isis 150 features a spacious one and a half bowls with a deeper than
average 200mm main bowl. All Isis sinks are available in right or left hand drainer format and with a range of useful accessories including basket, strainer bowl and chopping board.

Gloss Plum Prunus from EDP

The UK supplier of surfacing materials and components, European Decorative Products (EDP) is able to offer immediate supply of a high gloss PVC foil - Plum Prunus.

The Pentadecor (Roxan) manufactured foil reflects the strong growing trend and appetite for these finishes and surfaces. The grain is smooth, flowing and very discernable while remaining soft and subtle. The unique natural colours of Plum are clearly highlighted by the foil.

The effect of this gloss Plum door in combination with subtle tone carcase panels is stunning. EDP's Terry Willett says that ideal board colours that best offset the gloss Plum are colours like Egger's Alabaster (U10), its Vanilla (U108) and its elegant Sand Beige (U153).

True to the company’s central ethic of customer service, EDP holds in stock gloss Plum Prunus along with all other significant colour ways and woodgrains for 2/3 day service in 100m rolls with a respective width and thickness of 1420mm and 0.5mm.

Other high gloss PET colour ways stocked by EDP are White; Vanilla Cream; Cappuccino; Bordeaux Red; Sepia; Mocha; Black; Sahara Sand Beige.

EDP's Terry Willett says that customers have come to discern the differences in surfacing quality and how that translates to their products: ‘Now having the opportunity to source some of the best quality PVC and PET foils in the world from a local supplier in minimum quantities and to short lead times should give many of the UK's top door and cabinet furniture manufacturer a distinct advantage. It's a simple phone call away’.

And now EDP says that it offers an exceptional board-foil colour matching service with a very fast turnaround of samples and minimum order quantities for trialling samples.

Benefits of LG HI-MACS®

While LG HI-MACS® is generally defined within the descriptive boundaries of a ‘solid surface’ material it is, in fact, a Natural Acrylic Stone as distinct from a Solid Surface. The company says that this is mainly because of the way it is composed and manufactured and offers designers, fabricators and users a number of important benefits which set it apart from and in front of general solid surface materials.

Primarily LG HI-MACS® is a thermal-cured surface as opposed to the more conventional chemically-cured solid surface. Thermal curing brings important benefits:

* Thermal curing gives a slightly harder and more stable surface which, in turn offers better consistency

* The LG manufacturing process achieves a greater translucent depth. This is because the company’s manufacturing process, and the unique composition of its material, allows particles to be more evenly distributed throughout the material as opposed to only the top third of the surface.

* The thermo-curing manufacturing process has allowed the introduction of the Volcanics collection which incorporates significantly larger particles with stunning depth translucency

* Because thermal curing gives a harder surface it is more resistant to scratching and easier to work and fabricate

* It is totally non-porous and normally can be cleaned with just a cloth and detergent. Should some marks persist they are easily removed with brand-named products like Bar Keeper's Friend™ Light scratches can be removed with a gentle abrasive like a Scotchbrite pad. Deeper scratches can be removed by sanding.

LG HI-MACS® is a leading material with which to work and design. It is supplied with a protective coating that need only be removed after the sheet has been worked on CNC machines.

The material is also supplied in 9mm sheets as standard. These sheets are for use in any situation where the application does not involve heat - so vertical surfaces, wet surfaces in showers etc.

The formable properties of LG HI-MACS® for creating complex 3D elements are exceptional. This includes being able to create colour-matched sinks to worktops. The material allows joints with a full seamless effect to be made.

LG HI-MACS® has a full 15* year warranty versus the usual 10 year digressive warranty.

‘All of these properties make LG HI-MACS® today's and tomorrow's advanced, hi-tech surface for designing and hi performance use,’ says the company.

* An initial 10-year guarantee + an extra 5 years when you register on the Internet site at http://www.lgchemeurope.com

Bushboard Launches new Encore Range

Bushboard has added to its laminate portfolio with the launch of a new range of off-the-shelf solid surfaced worktops. Titled Encore, the range offers eight finishes that blend fine particles with a fashionably neutral colour palette that will suit a host of kitchen styles.

Significantly, as a ready-made product, Encore is positioned to offer the greater accessibility to the same style and quality of solid surfacing, while being so much more affordable compared to a bespoke product.

Encore's appeal lies in the seamless flow of the material offering a very design-versatile product to create minimalist styling and a unified flow between the the worksurface and walls. Worksurface blanks are supplied factory-edged on the two short sides and long front edge and are available in 4100 x 650 x 44mm. Breakfast bars are edged on four sides, with one square and one bowed end in overall size 2400 x 900 x 44mm. Completing the look are upstands in 3600 x 100 x 12mm; midway panels in 4100 x 600 x 5mm and hob panels in 1220 x 1200 x 5mm.

Says Stuart White, managing director of Bushboard:
'From our research and knowledge of the market, we know there is a clear opportunity for ready-made solid surface blanks that to date has not been capitalised on by any manufacturer. The profile customer is design-oriented looking to upgrade from laminate but who doesn't have the budget for the type of premium solid surfaces currently on offer.'

Confidence, performance and durability are a given with Encore's premium specification. Made from compression reinforced acrylic, the product has some extremely high performance characteristics unique to Encore against comparative materials.

Encore combines a thicker than average 5mm solid surface layer onto a high density environmentally preferred chipboard substrate and is backed with a high pressure laminate on the underside.

Independently tested by FIRA the Encore surface is resistant to temperatures of 240ºC and is five times more impact resistant than any of its peers. The hard non-porous surface is beautifully practical, yet incredibly tough when it comes to everyday wear and tear and common kitchen spills. It's hygienic and easy to keep clean with mild detergent and water.

With Encore, Bushboard have applied their extensive expertise in laminate worktop manufacture and applied it to the modern material of solid surfacing. Close to £1m has been invested in a bespoke production line at the Wellingborough headquarters. This gives the company a manufacturing first in being able to produce ready-made solid surfaced worktops in volume with the same precision and technical excellence as their Prima, Omega and Odyssey laminate ranges.

Says Stuart White, managing director at Bushboard:
'With Encore, we are applying everything we know about worktops to set a new benchmark in the solid surface sector. Our customers have a high expectation of a Bushboard worktop and we are confident that we have replicated that with Encore. Our aim is to open up the market with an off-the-shelf product that is best in class and can be used with absolute confidence for its design appeal, unrivalled specification and outstanding performance. No-one has done that yet.'

Bushboard has underpinned the Encore launch with an extensive marketing programme and retailer support package. There is a new 20 page colour brochure, a bespoke display stand complete with worktop and breakfast bar samples as well as large individual samples. Bushboard also has a dedicated Customer Service Team on hand to provide product and technical support to retailers and consumers over the telephone, as well as despatching samples and information within 24 hours. Encore will be available ex-stock nationwide from 24 distributors from October.
