In Design - Back to Nature

In Design has introduced the Villeroy and Boch Pure Stone collection of bathroom furniture and ceramics. Inspiration taken from the humble pebble, Villeroy and Boch has created a luxurious range of bathroom furniture designed to be timeless and in harmony with today's contemporary look.

Pure Stones corpulent surface mounted washbasins are available in two different sizes and with a choice of three different shades of white. The latest addition to the colour range is a grey stone glaze which is applied by hand in a multi stage manufacturing process, leaving a matt-glossy finish with just a hint of texture. The warm walnut and oak veneer furniture sits in contrast to the cool stone sanitary ware.

Such simplistic design can only be accompanied by the most pure of accessories. Source flow tap fittings are in keeping with the bold organic forms, whilst the bidet and washbasins retain their curvaceous shape by concealing the overflow.

Pure Stone is equally striking in a small bathroom; its natural qualities create style whilst creating a feeling of spaciousness.

New colour Portfolio for DuPont™ Butacite® PVB Interlayers Enhances Design Appeal

DuPont Glass Laminating Solutions is introducing a collection of coloured DuPont™ Butacite® polyvinyl butyral (PVB) laminated glass interlayers to further extend the product's use in the architectural and interior design sectors. Particular features of the company's new solid colour portfolio are the spectrum of colours on offer - 30 in all - and their availability in either transparent or translucent form.

Produced at the recently-integrated Retrim facility in Zlin, Czech Republic, the new Butacite® PVB colours will be launched across the globe during the first quarter of 2006.

Originally used in automotive windshields, laminated safety glass with Butacite® PVB interlayer is experiencing increased adoption in residential and commercial applications such as partitions, cladding, curtain walls, doors, and even roofs. Its principle benefits include those of increased safety - i.e. performance under impact - security, sound reduction and solar and ultraviolet control.

DuPont is now complementing these functional properties by launching the new range of solid colours, thus enhancing the product's architectural and design appeal. Indeed it was based on feedback from these sectors that the company selected and ‘christened’ the 30 colours available - resulting in exotic and appealing names such as 'Papaya Yellow', 'Cantelope Orange' and 'Violet Grape'. The colours were also chosen to harmonise with other DuPont products for the residential and commercial sectors, such as the popular and versatile DuPont™ Corian® solid surfaces.

A further novelty of the new range is that all 30 colours are available in either a 'Classic' (transparent) or 'Discrete' (translucent) edition. The addition of the translucent option, an innovation in the coloured interlayer market, enables the partial obscuring of objects and items behind the laminated glass - an interesting design option, particularly for use in bathrooms or boutiques for example.

The first public display of the new Butacite® PVB colour portfolio was during a customer event held at the Retrim facility in the Czech Republic where the coloured interlayer is manufactured. The event, which took place at the end of November 2005, also saw the launch of Butacite® G Bright Vision™, a new generation of clear PVB with enhanced optical properties both for automotive and architectural applications. The customer day marked the completion of investment in the Retrim production facility, which includes a new and highly-sophisticated extrusion line to boost both capability and capacity. DuPont acquired Retrim, a company with expertise in the use of recycled PVB to make high-quality interlayers, in February 2004.

Commenting on the launch of its new colour range, Jiri Lang, DuPont Glass Laminating Solutions' Retrim manager said: ‘We believe that recognition of the benefits of laminated glass, particularly in interior design, is growing. In order to encourage this growth, we are launching a comprehensive range of colours in transparent and translucent editions, to enable greater flexibility in the creation of appealing, secure and comfortable interior and exterior spaces.’

Reviewing the successful integration of the Retrim business and the company's subsequent investment in the facility, Luigi Robbiati, Vice-President of DuPont Glass Laminated Solutions, added: ‘The acquisition of Retrim, the associated capacity increase, and now the launch of the first new product range from the facility - all are strategic measures aimed at achieving our vision of becoming the preferred supplier and leading innovator of the glass laminating industry.’

DuPont Glass Laminating Solutions provides materials, services and innovations for a better, safer world. The business operates within the DuPont Packaging and Industrial Polymers strategic business unit, part of DuPont's US$ 5.3 billion Performance Materials growth platform.

Geberit Ltd. Provides the Designer Finishing Touch with its New Decorative Traps

Geberit Ltd. launched its new range of decorative washbasin, shower tray and bath traps at KBB this year. ‘With an attractive and design led external appearance these new products offer interior designers, bathroom retailers and specifiers aesthetically pleasing and innovative solutions with all the quality, reliability and functionality you would expect from Geberit,’ says the company.

A metric to imperial adaptor was also launched in association with these traps and is included as standard within the packs. The new 'Decorative Traps' range from Geberit includes:

* Washbasin Trap (x1)
This bottle trap incorporates a new built-in hydraulic element which channels the water towards the waste pipe in a concentrated self-cleaning flow. Suitable for use with washbasins where the trap is in plain view, its stylish design and chrome finish make this trap a real design feature.

Geberit says that the majority of aesthetically pleasing traps currently available on the market are made of metal and often have the associated problem of corrosion. The Geberit trap is made of sturdy, non-corrosive ABS plastic, offering a cheaper and more durable option. In addition, installation to every washbasin type is made quick and easy with a telescopic vertical pipe and an easy to cut horizontal pipe.

* Bath Traps (x4)
A first for Geberit in the UK, these bath traps offer a combined trap and overflow system that not only looks good but also offers performance and durability. The chrome popup cover and overflow rosette are combined with high quality, heavy duty cabling for smooth operation and long life.

In addition, versions that incorporate a 'filler' function are available of use when taps would get in the way, either visually or physically. For example, when a shower needs to positioned above taps. By allowing the bath to be filled from the overflow, such problems can be eliminated and cleaner lines can be created within the bathroom.

Available sized for large and standard bath lengths this range is especially easy to fit. Markings to assist in measurement and cutting allow installers to fit and forget without fear of leakages after settling and the low trap height means there is no need to cut floorboards.

* Shower Tray Traps (x2)
Designed for flat and extremely flat shower trays the new 52mm and 90mm shower tray trap and waste systems from Geberit both have fast flow rates and are capable of dealing with the run-off from power and even rain showers. In addition the narrowness of these traps makes them easy to fit in the smallest of spaces.
Designed for use with trays with recessed larger wastes, the 90mm trap features a cover at tray height that can be removed for easy cleaning access.

The New Signatures Collection from Roper Rhodes

New from Roper Rhodes is the Signatures collection - six distinct ranges of high quality modular bathroom furniture and storage. Signatures allows the consumer to create a bathroom space that matches their lifestyle.

Comprising six different styles - Ella, Mirage, Silhouette (pictured), Bliss, Tempo and Solo, the Signatures range stretches from cool and contemporary to warm and traditional designs.

‘Signatures is different because it utilises a display stand to showcase all six range designs plus handle options and the choices of worktop finishes,’ says the company. ‘Whilst this is commonplace in the fitted kitchen and bathroom market, it is unique within the modular bathroom furniture sector. The appeal to the retailer is clear, the opportunity to offer a wide variety of designs from a limited number of displays thus minimising the amount of valuable showroom space required.’

Each range includes ready-assembled vanity base units with interchangeable doors available in many popular formats. A space-saving range including 400mm width vanity & corner vanity units along with a slimline back to wall WC unit offers solutions for smaller bathrooms. Conventional 500mm, 700mm, 800mm and 1000mm width vanity units plus a variety of freestanding storage units are also provided. These (with the exception of the 500mm unit) can be joined along with the 620mm back-to-wall WC unit in a single run of furniture by using the continuous worktops & plinths provided.

A choice of slab top basins, a selection of door-knobs & door-handles plus a variety of matching mirrors and cabinets with lighting complete the look.

Signatures will be available nationally from March via the extensive Roper Rhodes network of bathroom retailers and merchants.

Go with the Flow

Twyford Bathrooms, part of the Sanitec group, has introduced Flow, a new contemporary bathroom range to its core over the counter collection.

Designed by the award winning Iranian architect and designer, Hadi Teherani, the company says that Flow is an exercise in visionary design combined with optimised installation and hygiene technology.

Derived from a mix of architectural and natural influences, Flow takes as its central theme the natural principle of the wave and seeks to unite areas within the bathroom using organically fluid forms. The resulting collection has none of the usual edges or corners associated with conventional sanitaryware. Because they are the same depth as a standard tile at every point that they are fitted to the wall, all products offer a complete and unbroken line and the sense that they 'flow' from the wall.Yet despite its high profile designer features, Flow will be sold as a mid range suite and as part of the Twyford core collection, responding to customers' expectations that good design needs to be affordable.

The company says that the stars of the Flow range are undoubtedly the basins. ‘With their strongly organic feel, they form smooth arcs rising and falling from the bathroom wall. This can be used to a particularly stunning effect if positioned side by side in a domestic arrangement or in a series for a commercial specification.
The smooth curves don't just look good, thanks to their concealed fixings and uninterrupted smooth surface, they can be cleaned quickly and effectively, which is not just a benefit in public areas!

‘However, Flow is not just about designing something that looks good. Hadi Teherani's architectural expertise has taught him about how objects interact with each other within a space. As a result Flow is highly functional, incorporating sleek storage areas and allowing for a real of sense of unity through all pieces.

‘The furniture elements of Flow have a simplicity that belies their level of design and functionality. Curved handles emerge from drawers much in the same way as the basins emerge from the bathroom wall giving a wonderful sense of continuity to the overall look of the finished room. The handles can also be fitted with optional decorative faceplates in two colours and in the choice of either wood or metal finishes allowing to create a bathroom as individual as the end user.

‘With a standard floor clearance, flow offers a truly modular bathroom system, allowing total flexibility in choice between the various pieces of sanitaryware and furniture. WCs come in HO Outlet, Back to Wall or Wall Hung, while bidets are either floor standing or wall hung, allowing for even greater customisation options.

With a choice of 5 washbasin sizes (50cm, 60cm, 65cm, 70 cm and 40cm hand rinse) and the option of a full or semi pedestal, Flow offers complete flexibility in realising an array of bathroom schemes. A 60cm semi recessed basin is also available for more commercial applications.

The new Twyford Flow suite with its strong directional design represents a real step change in the type of product being offered through the Merchant channel. Other design focus suites are planned for introduction in 2006.

New England & Valencia

Roper Rhodes used the platform of KBB 2006 to present the latest additions to the popular Valencia and New England ranges.

New to Valencia and New England is a range of semi-fitted storage furniture, space saving solutions and new worktop options - collectively called The Linx System.

The Linx System storage furniture and back-to-wall units for New England and Valencia feature a reduced overall height and increased depth. This allows for semi-fitted furniture runs to be installed, which neatly butt against the existing 700mm, 800mm and 1000mm vanity base units. All units have an improved specification including the addition of soft-close door dampeners throughout the range.

Accompanying laminate worktops for all new products are available in gloss white, beech (for New England only) and black granite effect.

With smaller bathrooms in mind Roper Rhodes has developed for the New England range a corner base unit and basin to maximise the often redundant corner spaces.
Also new to New England and Valencia is a slim-line back-to-wall unit for the fitting of back-to-wall toilet pans and bidets. New England units are available in either high-gloss white or beech finishes, whilst Valencia units come in a high-gloss white finish only.

Geberit Ltd. Launches New Cistern and Duofix Frame Height

Geberit Ltd. has launched the company's new concealed dual flush UP200 cistern and 0.98m Duofix wall hung frame for WC, washbasin and bidets.

The new concealed dual flush UP200 cistern comes with the 0.82m and 0.98m Duofix wall hung WC frames and is available separately for use with back to wall floor standing WCs. Delivering improved flushing performance, it is easy to install and maintain with innovations such as click-fit pushrods and hand operated isolation valves.

Taking into account practice in the European furniture industry, which has adopted the 0.98m height as a standard, the new Duofix 0.98m frame height supersedes the company's existing 0.88m height. This change recognises the fact that the population is now generally taller.

The Geberit Duofix wall hung frame system has been perfected over more than 20 years. Complete with built in cistern, ready to connect pipework and requiring just two floor and wall fixing points it is incredibly easy to install, producing a first class result every time, with all plumbing and pipework neatly concealed behind the frames.

Load bearing in its own right the Geberit Duofix frame can take a 400kg (64 stone) load and the patented Geberit cistern design offers easy access through the flush plate aperture for simple maintenance. There is even a specially designed corner frame which turns the traditionally difficult corner situation into a stylish designed feature and allows ducting to continue uninterrupted.

The Geberit Duofix system is equally suitable for domestic and commercial washroom applications. Frames are available for WC's, bidets, washbasins and urinals and can be simply bolted to the floor and placed in front of the wall or in a stud, giving designers complete freedom to create wall hung bathrooms without expensive structural building work.
