A Dramatic Bathroom Centrepiece from Splash

Splash distribution, exclusive distributor of Alape bathroom products, announces the addition of the WT.RX washstand to its portfolio.

The basin is suitable for those purists who seek contemporary styling in the bathroom, where a traditional basin and pedestal unit is not ideal, and space is perhaps too limited for a vanity unit or similar furniture item.

The basin is formed from the cylindrical pedestal offering clean lines and a 'chunky' look, which can be enhanced with one of the many brassware designs, also available from Splash.

'Made from glassed steel, the WT.RX washstand has the potential to become an iconic bathroom product.' says the company.

Available in pure white and colours, the WT.RX measures 900mm in height and 400mm in diameter, and is priced from £973.31 inc VAT.

Barcelona Beauty from Ideal-Standard

‘Designed by Anna Dabrowski at Studio Levien in London, The Bath represents the ultimate in freestanding luxury bathing.’ says Ideal-Standard.

Inspired by the Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona Chair, the design team at Studio Levien have created 'The Bath' to be simply beautiful and beautifully simple.

The 170 x 75cm Idealcast bath has no tap deck and features a very simple narrow rim around its whole circumference. This makes the bath visually delicate and also leads to the internal bathing space being maximised (645mm at the widest point).

The Bath takes advantage of the strength and lightness of Ideal-Standard's own Idealcast material - a resin mineral composite cast onto an acrylic shell to give the kind of rigidity usually associated with cast iron. Such a narrow rim (50mm) can only be achieved with this kind of strength.

The Bath is available in two versions, either with Wave legs made from polished stainless steel or aeroply Trestle legs as above (10 laters topped by a maple laminate stain tinted lacquer).

Pure Stone – Seemingly Formed by the Eternal Flow of Water

'Not the hammer blow, but the water's dance rounds the pebble to beauty.' Is there a more expressive way to describe the relationship between stone and water than in this epigram by Rabindranâth Tagore, the Indian-Bengali winner of the Nobel prize for literature? asks Villeroy & Boch. 'For thousands of years, if not since time began, the eternal flow of water has lent unique shapes to even the hardest of stones. It does this with a constant, never-ending power which fascinates has not ceased to fascinate us people to the present day. Water and stone – these two elements express original nature, harmonious symbiosis and perfect beauty. Every single pebble, no matter how simple, shines distinctively as a unique specimen.'

The Uniqueness of Smoothly-Washed Round Pebbles
Villeroy & Boch has taken its inspiration from this interaction between water and stone and created the 'Pure Stone' bathroom collection – not with a hammer blow, but using the very latest in production techniques. This technique reproduces the pebbles particularly authentically and reinterprets them in an unusual arrangement. Owing to the stone shape the high-quality ceramic appears tremendously strong and tangible while remaining intentionally simple and reduced. In order to further emphasise the natural stone look, Villeroy & Boch has developed a special glaze in a soft-grey stone look which, when combined with the technique applied, turns every item into a genuinely unique piece. Alternatively, the ceramic elements are also available in an even more subtle, pure-white design.

Nature's Power and Peace in the Bathroom
The furniture to match 'Pure Stone' is also strikingly natural while displaying high-quality and perfect workmanship. It is made in the harmonious real-wood combination of light oak and dark walnut with matt surfaces, which have been varnished three times and seem to be completely untreated. In order to lend greater intensity to the peace of the design, handles have been completely omitted. Instead, recessed finger grips are provided to gently open and close the furniture elements. The natural character is further emphasised by the matching 'Source flow' fitting, which feeds the stone with water like an open spring and in so doing, seems to constantly hollow it out even further. Designer Oliver Conrad modelled the fitting on a natural watercourse and partly opened it, like a bamboo cane which has been cut into, and through which the water becomes visible. An elaborate technique ensures that the water accumulates slightly before flowing out into the basin in an extremely clear 'spring' jet. In the visible interior of the 'cut bamboo cane', Source flow also reveals a delicate shimmer, which is based on the interplay of light on the river-bed pebbles. A soft lighting has been integrated to perfect the natural presentation. When turning off the collection's mirror lights, for example, impressions of a romantic setting sun are evoked.

The new Premium Collection, 'Pure Stone' introduces the power and peace of nature into the bathroom, transforming it into a totally individual refuge. Those who choose 'Pure Stone' acquire what many people of our increasingly over-stimulated age long for: 'A little bit of nature all to myself'

The Product Range: a whole wealth of variety for distinctive interpretations
The different wash-basin variants ensure scope for individual design when furnishing the bathroom. A wall-mounted wash-basin is available, as are two sizes of top-mounted wash-basin and a smaller hand wash-basin, which can be combined with a one-hand fitting or a bib fitting. These are complemented by a wall-mounted washdown WC with matching toilet seat and equipped with 'Softclosing' and 'Quickrelease' features, and a wall-mounted bidet. The collection is rounded off both functionally and aesthetically by its three ceramic accessories: dish, jar and stone.

The furniture range also comprehensively designed. There is a choice of two floor-mounted base cabinet variants for the two top-mounted wash-basins: one with full, closed doors, or alternatively with/without open shelves and two wall-mounted variants for the wall wash-basins. These are complemented by shelves, optionally with integrated lighting, which can either be presented in an open form or also converted into a closed cupboard. A particularly novel and practical idea is the shelf with integrated drawer, which forms an ensemble with the WC and bidet. Here it's possible, for example, to deposit magazines or discretely accommodate toiletries in the integrated drawer. The range furthermore includes: a cupboard which can be combined with the shelves. Rounding off the furniture range are various illuminated mirrors with soft-touch technology.

The soft contours of the 'Source' series have been taken up for the 'Source flow' series of fittings and reinterpreted in an unusual way. In addition to the 'cut-into' bib fittings, 'Source flow' also comprises a one-hand mixer tap, both for wash-basins and bidets, all finished with a chromium metal surface. Further fittings and accessories can be supplemented from 'Source' series.

Jacuzzi Teams with Pininfarina to Create Morphosis® Line of Whirlpool Baths

On January 11th, Jacuzzi, known for originating hydrotherapy, announced a new initiative called Morphosis and unveiled a new series of whirlpool baths - Alpha, Gamma and Sigma - that were designed in conjunction with Pininfarina, legendary for the company's Ferrari car designs.

Morphosis is a new Jacuzzi initiative focused on seeking out ventures in order to combine the best design aspects from outside the bath industry with the performance and technology Jacuzzi is known for.

From the Greek word 'morphosis' - to take shape, and also Morpheus, the god of dreams, the new Alpha, Gamma and Sigma whirlpool baths merge high-end design with hydrotherapy innovation. The fluid shapes of the bath tubs pair ergonomics with artistic design for a product that will be the centerpiece of the bathroom.

(L-R) Alpha, Gamma and Sigma - designed in conjunction with Pininfarina

'This first series of tubs coming out of the Morphosis initiative are luxury whirlpool baths designed for the most discerning homeowner,' says Kent Baker, president of Jacuzzi Whirlpool Bath. 'In this initiative we actively sought to integrate astoundingly different and forward-thinking design with what we know best - the movement of water. Our partnership with Pininfarina brings together two brands known for performance and innovation to elevate bathroom design to a whole new level.'

Each of the three whirlpool baths in the Morphosis® line envelopes the bather with design elements that unite technology with simplicity:

Alpha: a two-person whirlpool tub features a sleek design and an arch that runs above the bath to represent a protective gesture; the Alpha tub has four body and eight back jets that deliver relaxing and rejuvenating hydrotherapy. Chromatherapy lighting enhances the experience, including four translucent fiber optic lights that radiate from the jets and two LED lights that emit ambience from the arch.

Gamma: a corner whirlpool bath that offers ample space to enjoy the multi-sensorial experience; the Gamma tub has similar jet and chromatherapy lighting as the Alpha.

Sigma: a single bath that cradles itself around the bather to maximise the hydrotherapy experience; the Sigma tub has nine jets for back and body massage, and two translucent fiber optic lights from the jets and two LED lights from the arch to enhance the mood.

Matching Morphosis® china suites will be introduced in late 2005.

Kohler Purist® Hatbox Toilet Epitomises High Fashion in the Home

Kohler has recently unveiled the new Purist Hatbox toilet as an example of 'melding stark beauty with outstanding function'.

Conventional cues of the traditional toilet are removed as the minimalist inspired electric toilet offers a clean aesthetic both visually and physically with its tankless design. The result is a utilitarian product which provides tremendous performance yet offers unexpected beauty by turning common perceptions of what the traditional toilet should look like upside down.

'Over the past couple decades we’ve witnessed the television’s transformation from bulky boxes to slim, streamlined plasma screens and appliances change from typical white to commercial-inspired stainless steel and even retro colours,'
explained David Kohler, President – Kohler Kitchen & Bath Group. 'Why should the appearance and design of the toilet remain the same as it has been for the last century? The Purist Hatbox toilet is simply a natural evolution of how we perceive the toilet.'

The well-proportioned elliptical shape and clean lines and surfaces of the Purist Hatbox toilet offer style-savvy consumers a toilet that is simple, streamlined and pure. As a component of the popular KOHLER Purist Suite of products, the toilet stresses the clarity, geometry and precision of the Minimalist design school and offers a contemporary design choice in a typically traditionally designed product category.

The 'tankless' design of the toilet was achieved by utilising Kohler’s exclusive Power Lite™ technology – a quiet .2-horsepower electric pump fully enclosed with in the toilet bowl that provides a strong, powerful flush utilising 1.6 gallons of water. Combined with an electronic 'soft touch' actuator along the side of the toilet and the option for the water supply line to attach inside the bowl base by coming up through the floor, a smooth, streamlined external surface is achieved, making the toilet incredibly easy to clean and visually impactful.

The Purist Hatbox toilet also offers Comfort Height™ seating – a comfortable, chair-height seating for people of all ages and statures that also complies with the height requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Comfort Height toilets are comparable to the height of an average household chair – just over 17 inches – making it easier to sit down and stand up. Adding to this convenience is an ergonomically designed toilet seat with Quiet-Close™ functionality to prevent slamming of the seat and eliminate unnecessary contact with the underside of the seat. The KOHLER Purist Hatbox toilet is offered in six KOHLER colours to match the existing colour offering of the Purist Suite – White, Biscuit, Ice™ Grey, Almond, Sandbar, and Thunder™ Grey.

Loop NewWave – Successful Villeroy & Boch Design for 'Loop & Friends'

'A good design has lots of friends'. Two years ago, in accordance with this principle, brand manufacturer Villeroy & Boch set up the 'Loop & Friends' circle, for which the circular 'water-bowl Loop' was joined by the new wash-basin shapes: square, rectangle, triangle and ellipse, which all stood out due to the simple elegance of their clear shape. Now something else is awaiting the 'friends' – its name is 'Loop NewWave'. This new shape of wash-basin was inspired by the successful 'NewWave' design, which is currently still interesting both the trade and end consumers in the form of tableware, glass, cutlery and accessories from the Tableware Division.

The unusual 'NewWave Caffè' cup was recently awarded the world's first innovation prize, namely the 'German Business Innovation Award' for 2004. A decisive factor for the highly-esteemed award was the innovative content of 'NewWave', which was seen in its unique design and also in the specially-developed production technique, without which manufacture of the asymmetrical shapes would not have been possible.

Harmonious Sweeping Wave for an Exquisite Vanity Unit

'NewWave's' harmonious sweeping wave has now been transferred to a wash-basin. The result is 'Loop NewWave', which enables the creation of exceptional vanity units. And there's more: 'Loop NewWave', like all other 'Loops' can be additionally brightened with fresh colour. All 'Loop & Friends' are available in five colours and the bicolour-variant 'Colorline', with its coloured inner surfaces. By using these colours, it is possible to create additional features in the bathroom, which turn the vanity unit into a real eye-catcher. With the new wash-basin, those already in love with 'NewWave' tableware, can now also have that special 'wave flair' in their bathroom. 'Loop NewWave' is just the right solution, however, for all those who attach importance to design and love exceptional bathroom presentations. The new 'Loop NewWave' wash-basin is supplied in the 60-cm fitted and top-mounted versions and as a 51-cm base-mounted wash-basin.

The fitting to match 'Loop NewWave' is found in the 'Circle' series, whose design characteristics are seen in the brushed fitting handle and the curved spout. Chrome and brushed-chrome fittings are supplied, as is a large selection of accessories.

In the case of 'Loop NewWave', the existing furniture range has also been extended to include a base cabinet which displays the 'NewWave' wave design motif: the front, of embossed maple real-wood veneer, takes up the characteristic wavy structure of 'NewWave'.

The matching 'NewWave' bathtubs with their wavy, sweeping edge give a particularly successful three-dimensional rendering of the 'NewWave' design and can either be free-standing or wall-mounted. The baths are available in a rectangular form in the three sizes 170 x 70 cm, 180 x 80 cm and 190 x 90 cm, in a 180 x 80-cm oval form and a 190 x 90-cm hexagonal shape. The high-drawn head end ensures exceptional bathing comfort, which can be further enhanced by fitting a whirlpool system.

Bohle Introduces ‘Europe’ Shower Door Hinges

A bathroom is a very personal area where one wants to feel comfortable and be able to relax. Therefore, the demands regarding design and equipment as well as functionality are especially high. An all-glass shower enclosure lends transparency and elegance to a bathroom. Practical aspects of planning, installation and maintenance are very important, because diverse application possibilities, easy mounting, precise and long-lasting setting of zero position as well as low-maintenance cleaning and care are major requirements. Bohle AG has been a reliable trade partner for shower door fittings for many years. With ‘Europe’, Bohle is introducing to the market the first series of shower door hinges originating from Bohle's own development and production.

The new ‘Europe’ shower door hinges are intended for one-sided wall mounting and glass-glass construction (180° alignment) and accommodate glass thicknesses up to 10 mm. They are suitable for glass shower doors up to 100 cm wide (with glass thickness of 8 mm). You can choose from three different finishes: shiny chrome plated, matt chrome plated or stainless steel look. The narrow gap in the swinging axle of the door means less water can escape. Clamps as well as corner connectors (glass-wall 90°, glass-glass 90°) are available in the same finishes as ‘Europe’ and fit nicely into the total design.

Especially worth mentioning is the technology for setting the zero position, for which Bohle has a patent pending. A familiar and annoying problem when setting zero positions is the fact that, after being in use for a while, the shower door settles. Many conventional shower door hinges do not offer an acceptable solution to this problem: once the zero position has been adjusted and set, it no longer can be re-adjusted. Bohle took on this problem and can now present an elegant and easy-to-use solution. With the new Bohle ‘Europe’ shower door hinges, the zero position can be adjusted individually by ±5° and can easily be re-set at any time, even after prolonged use. After setting the zero position, matching-coloured caps cover all screws neatly and securely. Inserts made of an elastic, translucent, wear-resistant synthetic material rest slip-free in a groove of the hinge. The ‘Europe’ shower door hinge is distinguished not only from a practical point of view in terms of function and user-friendliness, but also by its design and elegance.

Bohle is a manufacturer and supplier of tools, machines and supplies for the glass processing trade and industry. The trademarks SILBERSCHNITT and VERIBOR are known worldwide. Also produced by Bohle are a variety of machines for professional grinding, drilling, sawing, sandblasting and fusing of glass as well as vacuum lifting systems. A comprehensive range of products for picture framing and art galleries is a further business sector of the company. In addition, Bohle has one of the largest coloured glass warehouses in Europe.
