Hotpoint Pledges £50,000 Additional Funds for Childline

Hotpoint, the UK based manufacturer, which is the official sponsor of ChildLine's 18th birthday campaign 'Safely to 18', is commencing additional fundraising for the Charity with the start of many internal activities which will include taking part in the world's biggest chorus of 'Happy Birthday', a sponsored ramble in the Scottish Highlands and a bike ride in Sardinia.

Every day ChildLine answers calls from around 2,300 children. However, lack of funds means that hundreds more children each day are unable to get through. Hotpoint has pledged to raise £50,000 through internal fundraising activities, which will go directly to funding the phone lines, in addition to the corporate sponsorship already provided to the Charity.

This month the Directors of Hotpoint's parent company, Merloni Elettrodomestici UK will be trekking for three days in the Scottish Highlands. There is also an eight-day fundraising cycle on the Island of Sardinia in Spring 2005 and the opportunity to run in next year's Flora London Marathon in aid of ChildLine.

The first ever ChildLine Day takes place on 15th October 2004 and Hotpoint staff will be joining people across the country, baking, selling and eating cakes to raise funds for the Charity, in addition to taking part in the World's Biggest Happy Birthday; where thousands of people throughout the UK will attempt to smash the current world record for simultaneous singing! With over 6000 employees in four plants across the UK, Hotpoint staff should be able to make a considerable contribution to the chorus.

Marco Marini, Managing Director of Merloni Elettrodomestici UK said:
‘We are delighted that we are able to support ChildLine with these additional activities. It is a great opportunity for everyone to get involved in the fundraising which will benefit such an important charity.’

'Hotpoint is the UK's most trusted appliance brand and it's new brand position, 'designed for the real world' is about making a difference to real families. Recognising that, for some people, the real world might not be all they want it to be, Hotpoint is doing something to help provide essential support to young people across the country.'

ChildLine's Chair, Esther Rantzen OBE said: ‘We're thrilled that Hotpoint is supporting our 'Safely to 18' campaign, and we look forward to a very successful partnership with them. Eighteen is a crucial milestone in ChildLine's life, a real coming-of-age. I now regularly meet young adults who tell me that they called ChildLine at a time of great distress or danger in their childhood, and that the advice and support they received made a very real difference.’

TTA & The Mad Medic

'At every TTA Gala Dinner we 'pass the pot' for those less fortunate than ourselves. In 2003 we collected over £800 was collected for The Lighthouse Club.' says the TTA. This Year Lesley Reid introduced the collection as follows:

Before we ask you for your help, I should like to tell you about something that happened back in the Spring of last year. Part of our remit in the TTA has been to promote the use of tiles. Last Spring we ran a competition in Home Magazine, with Ceramic Prints very generously donating sanitary ware and tiles, and Devi Electroheat providing a undertile heating system for the competition winner to refurbish a bathroom.

The winner was chosen and I wrote to Valerie Mulcare Tivey with the good news. A few weeks later I had a lovely thank you letter from Valerie and I’d like to read part of it to you 'I do voluntary medical work in Bombay caring for thousands of street children who call me mummy, so to fund it I go from job to job here in the UK. As you can imagine it takes every spare penny I have to do my work out in Bombay. It’s a labour of love, though I’m not complaining, but I have to work 7 days a week to care for so many children' The letter was signed Valerie, the mad medic!

TTA decided that there was no better cause to collect for than those poor street children in India and the TTA members did Valerie proud. On the night they donated £2612.00. One table gave over £300 in notes and coins and another gave an IOU for £500. People were so moved that many came along to the TTA stand on the Monday to give more as well as the company who gave the IOU. In total you raised £2675.25. Valerie is putting £2000 towards the building of a safe house and the balance will buy rice, flour, baby milk, medical supplies, clothing, books, writing materials, fresh food, towers, sandals, shampoo, soap, nappies, games etc.etc.etc. A big thank you to all you generous people!

Bristan Helps Santa at Local Hospital

Tamworth-based bathroom brassware supplier, Bristan, helped to make Christmas a little more bearable for some with their charitable efforts recently.

The company put the generosity of its suppliers to good use by organising an internal raffle.  All gifts given to Bristan or Bristan employees by an external supplier were given a raffle ticket number and the raffle tickets were then sold to employees for £1 each, with no staff being allowed to purchase more than two tickets.  A draw took place every day in the lead up to Christmas and the proceeds generated given to ‘Operation Christmas’ and Birmingham’s Children’s Hospital.

Operation Christmas is an appeal designed to bring a little joy and luxury to those less fortunate, particularly the sick, elderly and children.  Beneficiary charities include Acorn Children’s Hospice Trust, Barndardos, Scope, St Giles Hospice, Sargent Cancer Care for Children and Sir Robert Peel Hospital.

Commenting on the company’s charitable efforts, Managing Director Steve Lee says: 'Especially at this time of year as a company it is wonderful to be able to give something back to the community.  We are a large local employer, so we feel it is our duty to help to raise funds for good causes locally.  Everybody at Bristan was happy to give this idea their full and wholehearted support and we were delighted with the response.'

Armitage Shanks Raises over £2000 for BBC Children in Need

Armitage Shanks has raised over £2000 for BBC Children in Need. To raise the money and a smile on the face of the shoppers Armitage Shanks held a competition to find Potty Posers.

People were asked to join Pudsey and Armitage Shanks for a Potty Portrait at locations in Hull and Rugeley, where the company’s main factories are based.
Shoppers took a seat on the ‘Posing Pot’ and let the Armitage Shanks team take their photo. The idea was to pull the silliest pose possible. They were then asked to donate whatever they could afford to BBC Children in Need to be entered into the competition and given a copy of their photo.

Richard Moss, European Communications Manager for Armitage Shanks commented. ‘The idea for Potty Posers came up when we were brainstorming a way to raise money for BBC Children in Need in a fun and original way. It proved to be a great success – we raised an excellent amount of money, and everyone who got involved, or just watched (and laughed) from the sidelines, thoroughly enjoyed the event.’

Topps Fight the Mite Month...

September saw Topps Tiles' 'Fight the Mite' month to support the work of the National Asthma Campaign. The company has supported this charity since 1999, in particular raising awareness of house dustmite issues.

Almost half the 5.1 million people with asthma in the UK are sensitive to house dustmites. Over 100,000 house dustmites can live in 1 square yard of carpet. Laying tiles or wood flooring can virtually eliminate this part of the problem. Fight the Mite with Topps is designed to show how to make the home an asthma friendly place.

'Magic Makeover' raffle tickets went on sale in Topps stores throughout the country during September. 10 lucky winners will soon receive £1000 vouchers to spend at Topps stores on tiles and wood flooring.

Topps Tiles in Greenock has just been announced Champion Fundraiser 2003. 'We are right behind this campaign', said store manager Yvonne Brown 'as we know what a difference it makes to asthma sufferers when steps are taken to eliminate dustmites from the home'.

Yvonne is now looking forward to a trip to London to attend the National Asthma Campaign's 'BreathaBall', a star studded event where Topps Tiles will hand over a cheque for £75,000.

An Impulse to Raise Money for Local Air Ambulance Charity

General Manager of Birmingham-based Mandarin Building Products, Gary Hawkins, completed a marathon bike ride recently when he rode from John O’Groats to Lands End to raise funds for the West Midlands Air Ambulance.

Gary completed the infamous trip from Scotland to Cornwall with friends John Sheppard and New Zealander, Mark Norrie. The three rode their Harley Davidsons on the 842 mile journey and are now officially accomplished ‘End to Enders’. They started from John O’Groats at 1.20pm on Saturday 23rd August arriving in Land’s End at 9.20am on Sunday morning – a total of 20 hours astride their bikes only stopping for fuel and refreshments!

‘Riding a Harley Davidson is like sitting in an armchair with wheels’ Gary said, ‘We had the time of our lives – the trip probably took more hours organising than actually riding! But we managed to raise money and see parts of the country I have never been to before.’

Gary and the others are members of HOG (Harley Owners Group) based in Birmingham, and together they managed to raise £1,200 for the West Midlands Air Ambulance.

Gary continued, ‘We decided we would like to do something for the Air Ambulance as, being keen bikers, it is something that we value greatly, we all know someone who has needed to use the ambulance at sometime.

‘We have to apologise however to a lonely motorist, who at 3am was driving along an abandoned motorway when suddenly our three Harleys came roaring up behind spanning all lanes – he must have thought that it was the apocalypse!

‘Our next trip will be something a bit further, maybe around the coast of Britain which is about 3,000 miles or perhaps a trip to the four compass points, we’re not sure yet but I think I’ll have a rest first!’

When Gary is not ‘burning rubber’ or raising money for charity he is managing Mandarin Building products based in Birmingham. Mandarin is renowned for its Impulse Bathroom range of quality, reasonably priced sanitary ware including washbasins, W.C’s and vanity basins.

Mandarin has a very large overseas manufacturing resource and imports its Impulse bathroom products to sell throughout the UK to distributors, major retailers and builders merchants. Mandarin offers mid to upper markets an ever-growing number of different Impulse designs, from traditional through to highly contemporary, all designs are stylish and of high quality.

Think Pink!

Everyone knows just how hot pink is at the moment and with this in mind Aga is launching a fabulous, limited-edition pink cooker! And - perhaps best of all - a percentage of each sale will be donated to support breast cancer charities.

Just 50 pale pink, 3-oven Agas will be made and £1,000 from each sale will go to Pink Ribbon, which works on behalf of a range of breast cancer charities. Simon Page, of Aga, said: 'The new pink Aga looks great and we're sure it will be popular. But, most importantly, each time someone buys one they'll be raising money for an extremely worthwhile cause.

'The 3-oven pink Aga has baking, roasting and simmering ovens, ensuring all culinary aspects are covered. Model and Aga-lover Jodie Kidd is this year's face of Breakthrough for Breast Cancer. Commenting on the pink Aga, she said: 'Not only is the Aga a fantastic cooker, but breast cancer is such an important cause to support. The pink Aga is so special and the 50 people who buy them will be doing a wonderful thing for breast cancer sufferers and their families.'

Britain's love affair with the Aga has spanned the decades, but where once you'd expect to see the famous cooker only in large country kitchens, now you're as likely to find one in a town house or trendy city loft apartment. Available in 13 colours, plus the limited edition pink, and a wide variety of sizes and fuel combinations, there is an Aga to suit every style of kitchen.

Chris and Ingrid Tarrant Go 50:50 For LG and Teenage Cancer Trust’s Ice Cool Art Project

Chris Tarrant with his wife Ingrid are the latest celebrities to take part in the Ice Cool Art project and paint on an LG Ice Beam fridge. This unique project has seen famous faces from music, sport and art decorate LG Ice Beam fridges that will then be auctioned later in the year with all proceeds going to Teenage Cancer Trust.

Chris and Ingrid showed off their artistic talents as they painted the LG Ice Beam fridge in front of an audience in Capital FM’s foyer. The Tarrants’ fridge joins a growing collection of fridges for the Ice Cool Art project which includes entries from Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood, ex-Beatle Ringo Starr and the Spurs FC team.

However the question is will the Tarrants’ auctioned fridge reach the famous £1 million mark or will it stop at a mere £16,000?

Chris Tarrant says, ‘The Ice Cool Art project is an original idea for a great cause and one that we will certainly remember. It is funny to think that our decorated fridge might become a centre piece in someone’s kitchen.’

‘The support for the Ice Cool Art project has been overwhelming. It is fantastic that so many high profile people are willing to give up their time for Teenage Cancer Trust.’ Says Simon Davies, CEO Teenage Cancer Trust.

‘LG Electronics is delighted that Chris and Ingrid Tarrant have come on board with the Ice Cool Art project. We are delighted to be able to partner with Teenage Cancer Trust to support them with this project.’ Comments Jay Lim, managing director, LG Electronics UK.

The Ice Cool Art campaign is the first time Teenage Cancer Trust and LG Electronics have partnered together. It is hoped that from the auction the fridges will raise much needed money that will go towards Teenage Cancer Trust’s Teen Units that are set up in NHS hospitals around the country.

The Teen Units are a vital part of the charity’s campaign. Kitted out with the latest home entertainment and home appliance products they offer teen cancer patients a relaxed and alternative environment during their time in hospitals.

As part of the Ice Cool Project LG Electronics will also be donating its latest TVs, DVD players, fridges and microwaves to the teen units.

Ronnie Wood and Ringo Starr Come Together to Give Forty Licks for Charity

Ronnie Wood and Ringo Starr traded guitars and drumsticks for paintbrushes as they took part in the Ice Cool Art project. The two personalised fridges will be auctioned at the Sotheby’s, Olympia Rock ‘n’ Roll and Film Memorabilia sale on 24th September 2003, with all proceeds going to Teenage Cancer Trust.

Ronnie Wood and Ringo Starr’s entries are part of a growing collection of decorated fridges forming the Ice Cool Art project. The project is a partnership between LG Electronics and Teenage Cancer Trust where famous faces from music, art, entertainment and sport have been asked to show their artistic flair in the name of ‘fridge art’. Spurs FC, West Ham FC, Chris and Ingrid Tarrant are just some of the celebrities that have taken part in the project so far.

Ronnie Wood is used to the more traditional artistic methods as he attended Ealing Art School but Rolling Stone Ronnie gave the fridge more than 40 licks of paint and says, ‘It’s cool to do something original…I’ve never painted a fridge before!’ The guitarist painted the LG Ice Beam fridge with a creative and funky design.

Ringo emblazoned his fridge with an equally attractive design. Ringo has become an established artist not only as a musician – due to the global success of the Beatles in the sixties - but also painter, photographer and actor. It is therefore of no surprise that the one time member of the fab four adapted easily to the unique surface of the fridge.

Ringo commented, ‘It is great to be able to do something unusual that not only raises the profile of a charity but also some money. The Ice Cool Art project is a fantastic idea and is certainly the first time I’ve been asked to paint on a fridge.’

‘The support for the Ice Cool Art project has been overwhelming. It is fantastic that so many high profile people are willing to give up their time for Teenage Cancer Trust.’ Says Simon Davies, CEO Teenage Cancer Trust.

‘LG Electronics UK is delighted that Ronnie Wood and Ringo Starr have contributed to the Ice Cool Art collection in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust. Our Ice Beam fridges provide an unusual canvas for celebrities that aim to raise awareness for this worthwhile cause.’ Says, Jay Lim, managing director of LG Electronics UK.

The Ice Cool Art campaign is the first time Teenage Cancer Trust and LG Electronics have partnered together. It is hoped that the auction of fridges will raise much needed money for Teenage Cancer Trust’s Teen Units that are set up in NHS hospitals around the country.

Tottenham Stars Chill Out for Charity

Tottenham Hotspur FC marked their sign of approval for Teenage Cancer Trust and LG Electronics' Ice Cool Art Project at White Hart Lane. Trading their boots for paint brushes, the Premiership team showed their artistic flair on the unusual canvas of an LG Ice Beam fridge. The fridge will be auctioned for Teenage Cancer Trust later in the year.

The Ice Cool Art project initially kicked off during a week of concerts in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust held at the Royal Albert Hall ( 24-29 March 2003).

Coldplay, Eric Clapton and Roger Daltrey are just three of the many performers to sign an Ice Beam fridge during the six day event. Many other famous faces will be taking part in Ice Cool Art including Tottenham`s arch rivals, West Ham.

Tottenham's captain, Jamie Redknapp, says about the project, 'We don`t often get asked to put our artistic ability to the test but we were more than happy to show off our handy work for Teenage Cancer Trust.'

The club's chairman, Daniel Levy, says 'We are very happy to support such a worthwhile campaign as Teenage Cancer Trust. TCT and LG`s joint project has given my players a unique canvas to show off their artistic talents.'

'LG Electronics UK Ltd is delighted to be involved in such an original project and to be partnering with Teenage Cancer Trust. Our Ice Beam fridges provide an unusual canvas for celebrities that aims to heighten awareness about this worthwhile cause.' Says Jay Lim, managing director of LG Electronics.

The LG Ice Beam fridge features a unique cooling technology. The effective Ice Beam Door Cooling System ensures more even and rapid cooling throughout the entire fridge. In high temperatures and humidity, freshness is kept longer with optimum moisture for food. The Anti-Bacteria Door Sealing prevents mould proliferation enabling the consumer to keep food fresh for longer.

Simon Davies CEO of Teenage Cancer Trust says 'The project is a great idea. The idea of combining art and technology fits perfectly with the charity's aim to create specialist facilities for teenagers with cancer that are fun and funky, whilst providing top quality clinical care and support. We are delighted to be forming a partnership with LG and we look forward to seeing the artwork that the celebrities, artists and sports stars produce on these amazing fridges.'

LG Electronics will also be supporting Teenage Cancer Trust by supplying many of the teen units with much needed electrical goods such as fridges, microwaves, TVs, VCRs and DVD players.

Hopkinsons Fourways raise £ thousands for Comic Relief!

The UK distributor of bathrooms, kitchens and appliances, Hopkinsons Fourways, launched a 19-day Red Nose challenge over the recent Comic Relief period, aiming to raise thousands of pounds for the national fundraising event. £4,552 was raised through a Special Offers promotional campaign where for every customer order placed, Hopkinsons Fourways donated £10 to Comic Relief.

Staff also celebrated the 'The Big Hair Do' day by ditching the usual dress codes and dressing up in style to raise further funds for the worthy charity. Talking about the company's support for Comic Relief, director Andrew Yates said:

'Comic Relief is fun and easy to support and we would like to thank all our customers who supported our Red Nose Promotion. Charity Campaign Proves A Winner

KBSA members throughout the country took part in a Marie Curie Cancer Care fundraising effort spearheaded by corporate member James Herriot of The Callerton Kitchen Company.

James organised a prize draw in conjunction with Axiom, Corian, Carron Phoenix, In Sink Erator, Smeg and Atriflo, to coincide with the nationwide ‘Make a Meal for Marie Curie’ campaign. The prize kitchen was displayed on the KBSA stand at The Good Homes Show last year.

Anyone hosting a meal in aid of the campaign, plus their guests, was automatically entered into the draw for a splendid kitchen, worth some £25,000 supplied by the draw partners. 'We felt that the prize draw was an added attraction within the ‘Make a Meal’ campaign that would help raise even more money for this excellent charity,' said James Herriot.

'Our involvement as the KBSA in this project was significant and I would like to thank the partner companies who together donated the prize kitchen and all those members who organised lunch and dinner parties.'
