In addition to this, the event provides an opportunity for Shires to demonstrate its credentials as a 'one-stop shop' in terms of being able to offer everything customers need from steel and acrylic baths, sanitaryware, brassware and shower enclosures and bath screens.

Kenny Cameron, general manager at Shires Limited, comments: 'It's anticipated that over 5000 key decision makers will attend over a four day period so it will be the perfect environment to meet and communicate directly with key individuals from the sector allowing us to develop future relationships and nurture existing ones.

'Through dialogue like this, we have been able to customise many products for specific customers - most recently developing a specially reinforced bath for a council in Yorkshire.

'Participating in the event is an integral part of our business strategy moving forward this year. It will enable us to demonstrate our knowledge and understanding of this market, a sector we identify as a key contributor to the building of sustainable communities.'

Kitchen appliance manufacturer Siemens is taking centre stage at the first 'Grand Designs Live' show to be held in conjunction with 'The Times' newspaper at the Excel centre in London’s Docklands from 10th – 12th June 2005.

On display to the public for the first time at this show will be a coordinated collection of built-in appliances in a new mirrored black glass finish.

Called s-line, this new range achieves a balance between design and technology by combining beauty with brains to produce this built in cooking collection. Blum Launches Aventos at Interzum

Blum introduced its latest fitting for the controlled and effortless opening and closing of top hinged doors on wall mounted high and top cabinets.

While such systems are available generally on the market, as one would expect, Blum have surpassed all the existing actions with gravity defying smoothness by using refined kinematics in the mechanism.

Aventos is available for bi-fold doors, up-and-over designs or straightforward high-lift configurations. No matter the size or weight of the door, the power storage” feature of the new lift system requires the lightest of pressure and effort to open or close and the front can be stopped in any position and will remain there. Braking of the action is gentle and controlled due to the integrated Blumotion system and the housing of the mechanism is slim, elegant and streamlined.

From a manufacturers point of view, assembly is fast and easy with 3-dimensional adjustment on single or both bi-fold fronts and a uniform, organised product program on all carcase heights and widths. With production coming on stream now, the Blum Aventos will be fully available soon.

One of these is the new development of Blum's ‘Space Corner’ - the optimum usage of kitchen corner units using full extension drawers with integral Blumotion self-closing. The Blum Space Corner effectively utilised the entire interior of this difficult unit by storing contents through the full height and bringing them out on a required basis to the user in a fully accessible and organised fashion. At Interzum this was shown with the new system for synchronised drawerfront closing with the drawer closing action. This Blum solution allows manufacturers to use standard drawerfronts that do not have to be mitre cut or joined but automatically hinge neatly and perfectly back into place as the drawer seats itself. Apart from being an innovation for manufacturers, it should prove a powerful focus point for interest and sales right through to the end user.

Another simple but intelligent innovation shown allows an internal pull-out top drawer to be concealed behind a high drawerfront and emerge with the drawerfront when it is opened. This allows designers in the modern genre to keep with lines of wide, high drawers without an interrupting drawerline while the user continues to have the benefit of the most used top drawer emerging in one movement. A simple pressure on a central internal clip then lets this (e.g. cutlery pull-out) be slid back on integrated Blumotion while the bottom of the drawer is then presented for full access.

In terms of interiors Blum presented a versatile, universal knife rack to be accommodated within the flexible Orga-Line internal organisational system along with a useful removable spice rack to be placed on the worktop during food preparation and then slotted back into the relevant drawer space for full access and visibility - both dishwasher-proof.

The future for the ultimate in controlled cabinet door closing was shown with the Blumotion system now integrated into the hinge arm of the Clip top and other hinges. ‘This innovation has been a long time in R&D and will be finalised for full production in due course so to become the definitive cabinet door closing control mechanism for all applications’. says the company.

Innovations for the operation and motion of high and top cabinets were unveiled along with a number of other ideas for cabinet interiors.

These Blum innovations were shown within the context of Dynamic Space® - kitchen planning for ergonomic, enjoyable and practical kitchen performance.

Maytag's Family of Brands Brings Innovations to Clothing Care, Cooking and Cleaning at KBIS 2005

Maytag Corporation's family of brands showcased new products to make everyday tasks easier throughout the home at the 2005 Kitchen/Bath Industry Show and Conference, May 10-12, at the Las Vegas Convention Centre.

From the industry's largest capacity washer to the first three-in-one cleaning system for your hard floors to the first floating glass-panel appliances for your kitchen, Maytag Corporation brings innovations into the home through its Maytag®, Hoover®, Jenn-Air® and Jade® brands which were on display at booths #5351 and #5477.

New Maytag® Neptune® Front-Load Washer Offers Industry's Largest Usable Capacity
The newly designed Maytag® Neptune® Front-Load washer and dryer, the newest addition to the popular Maytag Neptune line, lets homeowners spend less time on laundry and more time on life. The Maytag Neptune Front-Load washer has the largest usable capacity in the industry at 3.81 cubic feet; it even fits a king-size duvet, 28 towels or 20 pairs of jeans.

The added capacity doesn't arrive at the expense of clothing care or efficiency either. Instead, the newest Maytag Neptune Front-Load washer meets consumers' demand for better care with the TurboClean wash system and more efficiency by saving up to $185 annually.* Money isn't the only thing saved. Time is saved too. With the largest capacity, more clothes can fit in each load, cutting down on time spent doing laundry.

Hoover® Gives Consumers Two New Tools to Achieve a Cleaner Clean
Who has time to get on their hands and knees to scrub their hard floors and those hard-to-reach places throughout their home? Who really wants to, anyway? Hoover gives homeowners the ability to go beyond hands-and-knees clean without the hassle. The new Hoover® FloorMate™ hard floor cleaner is the first three-in-one specially designed cleaning system to get floors beyond a thorough clean to a more complete clean, made easy. The result is a no-fuss way to clean a hard floor so completely that it will easily pass a 'white sock' test.

Hoover now has taken hard floor surface cleaning to the next level with the Hoover FloorMate hard floor cleaner, which features excellent cleaning power, easy operation and handy accessories to clean those hard-to-reach places. The Hoover FloorMate cleaner changes between vacuum, wet scrub and wet pick-up with a flick of your wrist on hard floor surfaces such as marble, vinyl, ceramic, laminates and sealed hardwoods.

While the Hoover FloorMate cleans hard surfaces, the new Hoover® SteamVac™Duo™ is the industry's first convertible deep cleaner for carpets. Its versatility, easy storage and convenient features make deep carpet cleaning available at any time for any mess, so you can get the job done right the first time and move on to more important things in life.

Suitable for young professionals, singles, small families and apartment dwellers, the Hoover SteamVac Duo combines a portable and upright cleaner into one easy-to-use and easy-to-store cleaner. Its lightweight, stylish design, easy storage and convenient features make the Hoover SteamVac Duo the best carpet-cleaning solution for small spaces.

Jenn-Air® Brings a Brand New Shine to the Kitchen
In high-end kitchens, homeowners seeking a contemporary look haven't had many options beyond the ubiquitous stainless steel. Seeking to provide a high- end alternative to stainless, Jenn-Air has introduced the first full-line of glass panel appliances.

Inspired by the popular Art Deco look, the new Jenn-Air appliance finish provides a smooth, opaque glass front for Jenn-Air refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens, warming drawers, cooktops and entertaining essentials. The clean, glossy appearance makes the new Jenn-Air glass suite a complement for contemporary, Euro-styled kitchens, yet the look also fits effortlessly in a classic or 'retro-styled' kitchen.

With the new Jenn-Air suite, homeowners can achieve a sophisticated look for all of their appliances that is striking like stainless, yet unobtrusive like custom overlay panels. The durable glass panes, available in white and black, provide a reflective finish. Plus, these glass panels extend beyond the face of the appliances, so hinges are hidden. This allows the counterdepth appliances like refrigerators to slide fully into a cut-out, so they are indistinguishable from more expensive built-in models.

During KBIS, the full Jenn-Air suite of floating glass-panel appliances was featured in Southern Accent's 2005 Carriage House Concept Kitchen. The Carriage House also showcased the Maytag Neptune compact washer and dryer.

Jenn-Air® Introduces New Toaster, Plus Other Finishes, Colours to Small Appliances
Striking the balance between art, form and function, Jenn-Air introduces the Jenn-Air™ Attrezzi™ toaster, the newest addition to its popular Jenn-Air Attrezzi line of stylish, high-performance small appliances. The toaster, which displays the same attention to quality, performance and simple elegant design as captured in the Jenn-Air Attrezzi stand mixers and blenders, offers more style and performance than traditional countertop tools.

The toaster also coordinates with the artistic shapes and colours of the Jenn-Air Attrezzi mixers and blenders, which were first launched in 2003 and that feature colourful glass bowls and pitchers designed to prepare foods as well as serve them.

For its Jenn-Air Attrezzi stand mixers and blenders, Jenn-Air introduces new limited edition Iced Coral glass bowls and pitchers. The Iced Coral etched-glass pattern is from renowned American glass artist Michael Weems and incorporates his signature frosted- and etched-glass design.

In addition, Jenn-Air captures the increasing popularity of sophisticated metal finishes for the home with the introduction of an exciting new Oiled Bronze finish option for its stand mixer, blender and toaster. The authentic metal finish is the first entrant of its kind in the high-end small appliances category.

Jade® Introduces Dual-Fuel Range for Home Chefs
Imagine the best of both worlds. A range with precision gas burners for pan-searing sea bass and an electric convection oven for preparing your infamous rosemary focaccia. Now, Jade Appliances introduces the home chef to this world with the introduction of the Jade Dual-Fuel Range.

Designed to meet the needs of discriminating home cooks who want the best performing appliances available, the Jade Dual-Fuel Range caters to cooks who agree that gas cooktops outperform electric, while electric ovens provide superior performance to their gas counterparts.

The Jade Dual-Fuel Range features industry-best power, flexibility and capacity. Each gas burner is equipped with BTU power ranging from 12,500 - 18,000 to deliver serious power to the pan for delicious results from simmer to sear. The oven also offers one of the largest usable oven capacities available in a cabinet-depth range, allowing you to bake more in less time.

Maytag Corporation is a leading producer of home and commercial appliances. Its products are sold to customers throughout North America and in international markets. The corporation's principal brands include Maytag®, Hoover®, Jenn-Air®, Amana®, Dixie-Narco® and Jade®.

MasterClass Conference is Moving West

After a highly successful first MasterClass Conference: Perspectives on Design in New York City last Autumn, the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA) has decided to do it again, this time on the West Coast.

'The Arrival of Kitchen Living' will bring a new set of inspirational keynotes by world-renowned design masters from across the world to the historic Palace Hotel in San Francisco, CA, June 16-17. The international list of speakers includes: Johnny Grey (UK), Roberto Lucci (Italy), Fu-Tung Cheng (USA) and Sean Carney (Sweden), among more to be announced.

Attendees will be enlightened by this unique mixture of talent and challenged by working side-by-side with fellow industry professionals in creative, problem-solving workshops. They will learn how to advance their design skills, expand their vision of creativity and special techniques that enabled the extraordinary success of each featured keynote.

Small groups of participants will meet with each keynote speaker on a more intimate level to discuss a specific design project, providing the opportunity to understand how the design leaders approach the most basic design challenges. These sessions will bring attendees together to share ideas, discuss problems, and enjoy the intellectual stimulation that can be derived from working with experienced and talented peers in a relaxed environment that is dedicated to inspiration.

Johnny Grey Returns
Back from the UK for his second MasterClass Conference, Johnny Grey, designer and owner of a design studio in the San Francisco Design Centre, will demonstrate his practical vision and skills as an observer and unique thinker.

Best known for incorporating soft geometry, democratic planning, and dedicated work areas, Grey believes the kitchen is not just an area for food preparation and eating, but the centre of all domestic life. It is the true living room of any home.

After graduating in 1977 from the London Architectural Association School of Architecture, Grey set up his own design studio, Johnny Grey Ltd., and since, his ideas have influenced the design world. His 'unfitted kitchen' concept was licensed to Smallbone in 1987. In addition to his studio and UK-based firm, Grey has authored The Art of Kitchen Design, The Hard Working House, The Kitchen Work Book, and Kitchen Culture.

'Johnny's presentation was inspirational, on a very emotional level that made me feel like I'm on the right track with my own designs,' Paula Arsens said of his keynote at the Fall MasterClass Conference. 'His use of space and opening up the homes to make the space more functional is intriguingly creative. I really enjoyed it, was very inspiring,' Deborah Kollmeyer added.

Fu-Tung Cheng
Born in Los Angeles in 1948, Fu-Tung‚s artistic background, cultural and personal experiences led him to many innovative and creative endeavors. He created his first-ever concrete countertop working with various industrial materials like stainless steal, used gymnasium flooring and salvaged steel-frame windows.

In 2003 he developed Cheng Concrete Exchange, an online channel for all topics, products and information related to interior concrete.

Their approach to design is wholly three dimensional, using hard model-concepts from the beginning to create tangible results of realism and feasibility. Simplicity is their most remarkable feature, designing simple, technical solutions that make the product both economical and reliable, with an eye to the manufacturing problems.

Lucci has lectured on design at Universities around the world and has showcased his work in museums in New York, Chicago, Paris and California among many other international exhibits. He and Orlandini are authors of the book Product Design Models and have won numerous industry awards including the Industrial Design Distinction and Best of Neocon Gold.

G&G Shows ‘The Inside Story’ at ZOW

While any visitor to the recent and highly successful edition of ZOW at Bad Salzuflen may have had problems distinguishing between hundreds of similar and look-alike products, one stand claimed to be distinctive in its quality and individuality of design - Britain's specialist manufacturer of customised drawer and other storage interiors, G&G Products of Manchester.

G&G have become the leading international manufacturers of both flexible and dedicated drawer interior storage systems.

The background is the company’s design and manufacturing facility with the most advanced CAD-CAM and multi-functional machinery.

The company has an equal ability to manufacture components and solutions in solid beech block (or any specified timber) alongside precision vacuum formed plastic solutions which can all be ‘mixed 'n' matched’ for an individual USP.
G&G's Managing Director Sam Grinshpan is a universally well known and well liked figure as could be seen by the stream of visitors from all continents coming onto the stand with greetings on first name terms.

‘The Inside Story’ was the theme of G&G's ZOW display. ‘G&G's production flexibility and attention to final quality marks our products in a league of their own. There really isn't a limit on imagination’ says Sam Grinshpan from a position of confidence.

So, whether a wholly dedicated gadget tray to a loose compartment organisational box set anything can be designed.

At ZOW some astounding new knife arrangements, speciality sushi trays, open revolving cheese boards with integral granite chopping surfaces and so many more items were displayed. So too were more variations of the increasing popular under-cabinet trays that drop down from under the wall cabinet plinth to house anything from a concealed spice rack to a gadget tray for house and car keys, mobile phones or wallets and passports.

The bottom line was that, at ZOW 2005, if any visitor asked G&G could they do ‘such and such?’ .... the answer was ‘Yes’.

PWS Wows at ZOW

ZOW, the internationally renowned furniture component exhibition in Germany was an overwhelming success for PWS. Presenting its latest door collection and key items from the accessories and components portfolio, PWS’ ninety square metre stand was buzzing with visitors from across the globe.

PWS has been exporting for 18 months and the sales momentum has gathered significant pace in this short period of time. And ZOW was the ideal platform to put PWS firmly on the international map, promoting the extensive PWS collection to a wider global audience.

Comments Blair Davidson, International Sales Manager at PWS, ‘We had an amazing response from visitors from every continent, it’s now the task of our export department to follow up on all the leads to fulfil and exceed customer expectations. Our attraction lies in our unique combination of service flexibility and comprehensive product choice, as the export customer is viewed no differently to the UK customer; there are no restrictions on order quantities, which are so often imposed by the manufacturers and other large distributors. So for the export customer it’s a win-win situation with over 6,500 product lines in stock at any one time, and the only leadtime being the shipping. We are confident we can facilitate any market worldwide with the infrastructure and service offering we’ve created in the UK, coupled with the breadth and depth of our product choice. With an impressive 48 door ranges, the portfolio has a truly international feel and look, literally encompassing the design spectrum from the truly traditional to the modern and minimal’.

With ZOW being such a resounding success for PWS plans are underway to spread the exhibition net across other continents next year.

Mercury at Homebuilding and Renovating Show 2005

Mercury Appliances Limited has showcased it's 'Beachcomber Colour Collection' of contemporary colours for the award-winning Mercury range cooker, to an appreciative audience at the Homebuilding and Renovating Show 2005 at the Birmingham NEC, April 14-17.

Developed in collaboration with internationally renowned design consultants Seymour Powell, and guided by extensive research into colour trends, the five new colours - Chalk, Sky, Stone, Mist and Storm, reflect the homemaker's increasing affinity to muted subtle shades and natural hues and tones.

This is the first time that Mercury has exhibited at the show, which is aimed at consumers who are either building their own home or undertaking major renovation work - and it has proved to be an extremely fruitful few days for the Lincoln-based manufacturer of exclusive kitchen appliances.

Taking pride of place on the Mercury stand was the sleek and sophisticated Mercury range cooker and powerful, whisper quiet extraction canopies, along with the gas hob, modular oven and modular grill.

Also, on show for the first time was Mercury's new 'Innovative Cookware' range of accessories. Designed to add to the pleasure of cooking by extending the range of cooking techniques that can be carried out with the Mercury range cooker, the new accessories match the high quality, sleek, minimalist style and professional kitchen credentials associated with the Mercury name.

Jenny Hyatt, Commercial Director for Mercury Appliances, took up the story: 'This was our first Homebuilding and Renovating Show, showcasing our products to an entirely new audience of design conscious self-builders. And although we did think that people would like what we have to offer we have been absolutely blown away by the reception that we've had' she said.

'Homebuilding and Renovating is an extremely important show for us, as it gives us the perfect platform on which to showcase Mercury to a key audience of design-conscious self-builders, who are looking for the best materials for their dream home. The past few days have been a resounding success and the whole team are absolutely delighted' She went on to say.

The Mercury brand has gone from strength to strength in the five years since the company was launched, and an extensive UK dealer network has been developed. A presence in Europe is also being established and the Mercury range of products has expanded significantly. The company has also just launched a new brochure and website.

The Mercury range cooker was short listed for the prestigious Homes & Gardens & V&A Classic Design Award in 2001 and, in 2002, won a Good Design Award from the Chicago Athenaeum. Mercury operates a UK network of dealers and retail outlets where Mercury products are displayed. Full product details can be viewed at http://www.mercury-appliances.co.uk

BSH Set to Unveil New UK Brand at Amdea Show 2005

UK household appliance group, BSH Home Appliances Ltd has chosen AMDEA Show 2005 in April as the launch platform for an exciting new appliance brand.

Following on from an extensive 2-year brand-positioning project to define individual strategies and create clear identities for each of the four existing BSH brands, the company has identified a new area of activity to be targeted by a total newcomer to the UK.

The new brand – being launched simultaneously in France and Italy as well as the UK - will become the fifth component of the group’s successful UK appliance portfolio, currently comprising the well-known names of Bosch, Neff, Siemens and Gaggenau.

With all the hallmarks of the BSH name, the new brand will initially focus on a range of freestanding products targeted to a younger, more price conscious consumer. All the new brand’s appliances come out of BSH’s own factories to guarantee that they are engineered to a very high standard.

The company has declined to reveal the name of the new brand or any more details of the appliance range at this stage, as it plans to keep this information under wraps until the start of the AMDEA Show on 24th April 2005.

Comments BSH Strategic Development Director, Steve Holton: ‘This is a new, vibrant brand with a totally fresh approach, very different to the rest of our brand portfolio. It will also offer well-engineered functionality, no gimmicks, concentrating on what really matters and with better quality than comparable ‘value for money’ brands.’

Peter Carver, Director General of AMDEA comments: ‘There could be no greater confirmation that the AMDEA Show really is ‘the place to be’ for manufacturers than BSH’s decision to unveil its new brand there. They know it is the ideal platform from which to launch new product, not just to their regular customer base, but also to a large number of other retailers. And it’s another reason for all dealers to make sure they register for the Show!’

Bosch, Neff and Siemens will also be exhibiting at the Amdea show where new ranges will be on display from all three kitchen appliance companies.

The AMDEA 2005 Domestic Appliance Show takes place in Hall 12 of the NEC in Birmingham from 24th – 26th April 2005. For more details and to register, visit http://www.amdea.org.uk/show-2005

Iconic Design goes Underground

Interior design experts, Justin Ryan and Colin McAllister have been showcasing the most innovative of Ideal-Standard bathroom designs in a most unusual setting at this year's Ideal Home exhibition.

The show featured four authentic show homes including strangely enough a cave home, one of the trendiest living spaces currently to hit the Mediterranean. The cave home has been styled and designed by Justin and Colin.

The most basic of settings reflects the simplicity yet ingenious design of Ideal-Standard's ‘Shower Tube’ and ‘The Bath’.

The Shower Tube, conception of French designer Marc Sadler, offers a completely new approach to shower delivery. Using stainless steel and a lot of imagination, Marc Sadler has transformed the humble shower kit into a real design statement. The shower tube stands 2200mm tall with a diameter of 100mm and delivers water through a three function shower head and thermostatic valve.

The Bath was inspired by the 'Barcelona Chair' which has become an icon in its own right in terms of design and inspiration. The design team at Studio Levien have created 'The Bath' to be simply beautiful and beautifully simple. The 170 x 75cm Idealcast bath has no tap deck and features a very simple narrow rim around its whole circumference. This makes the bath visually delicate and also leads to the internal bathing space being maximised.

For stockist information or to order a brochure call Ideal-Standard on 0800 590311 or visit http://www.ideal-standard.co.uk.
