Pip Pip Hooray

SCW (part of BLP UK Ltd) is known for the development of its Predor membrane pressed doors. After launching a range of successful contemporary styles, the company has now expanded its traditional range by introducing the increasingly popular Pippy Oak.

The vinyl foil which has a light tan to deep brown colour and small tight clusters of knots (where the word pippy is derived), is suitable for both the kitchen and bedroom market and can be used in combination with various door designs.

Based in Doncaster, BLP’s facilities can offer the customer membrane pressed cabinet doors, drawer fronts, shelves, fascia/end panels and mouldings in the new Pippy Oak foil.

Barry Berman Sales and Marketing Director for BLP said ‘We are delighted that there is a new traditional style available. For the last two years the emphasis has been on contemporary styles and it is easy to forget that the traditional market still commands a sizeable proportion of the market’.

BLP also specialises in veneer wrapped profiles and has also been able to recently introduce Pippy Oak veneer wrapped mouldings, which has proved to be technically challenging.

These and other designs can be seen at BLP’s Design Centre in Doncaster. For further information or to visit the Design Centre, contact BLP on 01302 794301.

Whitehall Unveils New Granite Ranges

Whitehall Fabrications, fabricator of luxury worksurfaces, has sourced two new granite ranges, which the company launched exclusively in the UK in December 2003.

The new ranges, the Jasmine and the Whitehall Gold Selection, target both ends of the market. The Jasmine range provides consumers with a granite worksurface that is more affordable and suitable for those with a more restricted budget, while the Whitehall Gold Selection is more exclusive and suitable for people looking for something unique.

‘In terms of cost to the consumer, the new granites cover both ends of the spectrum,’ said Stuart Daniels, sales director, Whitehall Fabrications. ‘The Jasmine range is approximately 20% cheaper than price band one of our standard granite. The reason for this is due to the fact that the granite we have sourced is bought in blanks rather than the traditional form of slabs, which effectively means that there is less wasted material.’

He continued:
‘At the other end of the scale, we were getting a lot of feedback from dealers requesting a more elite granite surface, which is why we are introducing the Whitehall Gold Selection. It is more expensive but the granites are absolutely stunning and unlike anything currently available in the UK.’

The Jasmine granites come in a variety of colours, including gold, grey, taupe, red, star white and green. The Whitehall Gold Selection comprises six specially selected granites from quarries all over the world.

Franke Broadens the Market for Beach Multi-Function Sink

Following the success ofthe award-winning Beach undermounted stainless steel sink, Franke has introduced the inset design. 'Our research shows that consumers like the way Beach accessories work together for a variety of food preparation tasks. They also like the big-bowl capacity offered within a standard 600mm module,' says Product Manager John Swain. 'But not everyone wants an undermounted system. Now available as an inset sink, Beach appeals to a much broader market.'

Like the undermounted Beach, the new BBX 651 11/2 bowl, single drainer sink has a removable half-bowl that can be locked into its 'rock pool' waste point or removed to create extra space in the main sink. Where the inset model differs is that the lock-in half-bowl and colander accessory are combined into one unit called the Duo Bowl, which offers a flush-fit with the sink drainer.

Into the Duo Bowl fits a 1.75 litre' capacity measuring bowl, which is flat-bottomed for stability when on the worktop. A stainless steel grille fits over the main bowl and the chopping board is shaped to fit around the bowl or the drainer. A slide, double-action button on the front ledge of the sink operates the dual pop-up basket strainer waste assembly.

Specially designed to complement the Beach sink style is the new MD (Modern
Design) Fuji single, side-lever tap, available in chrome or SilkSteel.

Beach designer David Goodwin commented: 'When it comes to sink design, the challenge is to add functionality, interest and added value into a product that is often taken for granted and lift it into the 'must-have' category. I believe Beach achieves this in good measure.'

Freshness and vitality with PWS’ latest door offering

Taking a new approach to kitchen design is something that PWS has become renowned for and its latest door offering, Freestyle Grey follows suit. The crisp, clean styling of the new door is accentuated by the coolness of the light grey colouring to give a door which is fresh and invigorating.

Freestyle Grey is quite unique in the way it can cross most design kitchen styles when teamed with the right materials and accessories. For those who like the sleek lines of minimalism, Freestyle Grey’s subtle tone combines beautifully with stainless steel to give a kitchen which is cutting edge contemporary.

Alternatively, when combined with rustic handles, spice drawer packs and glazed grille doors, Freestyle Grey takes on a completely different dimension. Taking things even further down the ‘country style’ route, Freestyle Grey looks great with pewter handles and granite tops.

A full range of accessories including a plate rack, bottle rack and cooker canopy are available to complete the look and for further design flexibility two feature door options can be added to the kitchen design.

All PWS products can be ordered via Tradezone, PWS’ increasingly popular e-commerce solution on www.pws.co.uk or by telephoning the Customer Service department on 01325 505 555

Composite Installation made Simple with Orama

Orama, the independent manufacturer of worksurfaces and associated decorative products, has added six composite designs to complement its recently launched Ardesco range of worksurfaces. The Ardesco Composite is a compression moulded solid surface material combining style with durability and performance. It has been designed to allow flexibility for easy and carefree installation.

Ardesco composite worksurfaces are available as sink, hob and workstation modules, which can be seamlessly incorporated into laminate worksurfaces. Sink modules are supplied with an inbuilt sink and a half, edged on all sides and under-mounted in the same material. The maximum single run of surface material available without additional joins is 3.6m.

Once installed, Orama says that Ardesco Composite can withstand the harshest treatments and is resistant to heat, staining and scratching. Thanks to its uniform solid composition with moulded-in reinforced particles, the worksurface is not subject to stress and thermo-shock and remains free from peeling. Minor repairs can be attended to rapidly with a user-friendly repair kit. The worksurface retains its permanent silky feel and rich look.

Ardesco also includes a variety of composite worksurface options. They can be simply and effortlessly installed by adhering to the self-explanatory step-by-step guidelines to provide a complete surfacing solution for the kitchen. The only equipment requirements are a sharp 12mm twin flute TCT router cutter, HDG660/HDGA arbor/B26 bearing to apply the groove; a standard masons mitre jig or J jig to produce the joints and a random orbital sander, in addition to masking tape and adhesive mix.

As soon as the jointing bolt slots and loose tongue grooves have been cut and are ready to be fitted, two layers of masking tape are applied to both tops along the joint edges, 3mm from the edge. A generous coating of adhesive is then applied to the loose tongue and the grooves. The first worksurface is positioned and the tongue inserted into the groove. The second worksurface is then positioned and pushed onto the tongue. The worksurface is drawn together with bolts and the surfaces are levelled by tapping with a rubber mallet. After levelling the two surfaces, the masking tape is bridged with a spatula and any excess adhesive scraped off. Finally, the strips of masking tape are removed before the adhesive cures. The adhesive will fully cure after 1 hour.

The bead can be removed by sanding as soon as the adhesive is cured. To achieve inconspicuous joints and to ensure the sanding area is blended in with the rest of the worksurface, the sanding area must cover an area of approximately 150mm to either side of the joint line. Sanding should be progressive using an 80 grit before increasing to a 150, 220 and finishing with a 320 grit.

A step by step guide to installing Ardesco composite worksurfaces is available from Orama by calling 01773 521 844 or by ordering online at http://www.orama.co.uk.

Orama offers high quality durable decorative panels and worksurfaces.
Established for many years, Orama holds ISO 9002 certification and the Furniture Industry Research Association Gold Award for product performance. The company is also a corporate member of the KBSA (Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Specialist Association). All Orama’s chipboard and solid timber products are sourced from 'responsibly managed' forests.

Wellmann's 2004 Kitchen Developments

Wellmann's new kitchens incorporate more intelligent ideas to enhance safety and increase storage. The most interesting is 'safelift' a glide-down compartment that is positioned behind a wall cabinet. There is a choice of three internal arrangements to store hazardous items. These are medicines or cleaning materials, knives and DIY tools including a power drill. Simply touching the panel at the rear of the wall cabinet gently brings the contents in to view. This is well out of the way of little fingers and is an important advance in kitchen safety. Safelift may also be used for flat VDU screens, keeping them clean and tucked away from food preparation.

TrackLine creates space between the worktop and the drawers and is accessed by pulling on an extruded aluminium section to reveal either a chopping board or a solid beech tray carved to retain knives and sundry items. The aluminium edge section running beneath the worktop is designed to take clip on accessories that include a mini waste bin, towel rail and even a table.

New styles to be launched early 2004 include high gloss flush doors in cream and grey, coloured vertical edged fronts and velvet matt wood effects. Wellmann kitchens are available from 40 In-toto showrooms and selected independent specialists.

New Door Styles from Trade Mouldings

Trade Mouldings has introduced four new styles that will be available ex-stock from the Rochdale Distribution Centre, the Dublin Distribution centre or direct from the factory.

The vinyl wrapped doors reflect uncomplicated, contemporary styles with clean lines and elegant recessed handles custom designed for the door.

Strata (pictured) is a Fino Bronze finish which accentuates the trend for horizontal grain effect with a textured finish. The Fino Bronze foil has a matching Egger board reference but Trade Mouldings Distribution’s Rod Bairstow says that he knows many customers will experiment with contrasting carcase effects like beech. He says that the door design is also particularly effective with a grey or metallic carcase.

The Centra door is a Celtic Birch finish where, again, a horizontal woodgrain has been used to contemporary effect. Here again the foil has been selected to work with matching MFCs Northumberland Birch and Celtic Birch from various board manufacturers.

A white flat version of the doors called Blanca has been launched concurrently.

Trade Mouldings will supply all these styles with pre-drilled handle positions with holes only partially depth drilled to prevent breakout.

In response to significant customer request an Ivory flat centre panelled shaker door called Gresham has also been launched with matching accessories.
All four doors are immediately available from stock with rapid lead time delivery.

Enhanced Work Surface Passion with Orama Splashbacks

Orama, the independent manufacturer of worksurfaces and associated decorative products, has introduced a set of seven laminate splashback options to complement its new Ardesco range of worksurfaces. These splashbacks are available in gloss or brushed aluminium finishes and designs.

The generous dimensions - 3000x600mm – ensure that the Ardesco range of splashbacks allow extensive protection of kitchen walls, units and appliances. Orama says that with a trend in the market characterised by a renewed preference for splashbacks over tiles, they provide a cost-effective alternative to tiles and they also benefit from the added advantage of their ease of installation.

More than a practical and flexible buffer, Ardesco splashbacks also bring a kitchen to life by enhancing the overall visual appeal with the ultimate personal and individual touch. As the choice of worksurface influences the appeal of a new kitchen, splashbacks can transform the initial design by providing more depth, enhancing existing features, creating a warmer environment and producing a special effect.

‘With the discerning and fashion-conscious buyer increasingly favouring functionality and individuality, splashbacks are ideal for producing a fresh and unique look and style. They complement a worksurface and contribute to the holistic approach when contemplating a complete kitchen refit. By combining colours or matching them with the choice of worksurface, splashbacks further bind all aspects of the room.’ says the company.

Orama offers quality durable decorative panels and worksurfaces.

Hettich FurnTech - Gently Closing Larder Units

Larder unit pull-outs with integrated 'Silent System' technology provide kitchens with a tangible feel of enhanced luxury says Hettich FurnTech. 'Even heavily laden, larder units close with a soft, gentle slow motion. Gone are the days when they slammed noisily against the cabinet carcase, giving their contents a resounding jolt.'

The cushioning system is integrated out of sight in the frame's cross member. The damper clips into place quickly and easily without any need for tools. As a result, the dynamic action of the air-cushioning system ensures a closing force that works equally well on pull-outs no matter whether they are empty or full.

The 'Silent System' cushioning fitting is suitable for use on the full extension 'Dispensa' pull-out with a loading capacity of up to 100 kg.

Eagle Launches MagMa and Sand'Or

Due to the ever increasing demand for solid surface worktops Eagle lnternational Distribution Ltd has launched two products, MagMa and Sand'Or, into the UK. Although primarily aimed at the worktop market, both commercial and domestic, Eagle says that the products' versatility enables them to be used for shower stalls, flooring and wall panelling.

MagMa and Sand'Or are both hybrids combining the best features of stone and solid surfacing materials, and are referred to as a semi engineered stone. This hard surface takes the appearance of stone but is composed of 90% natural raw materials. Both have been fully tested in house with many different materials (see picture left).

'The advantages to these products are awe-inspiring, they are 100% hygienic in that they will not promote bacteria growth, they are heat resistant, and therefore will not crack, craze, discolour or be defaced when subjected to high temperatures, such as hot pans placed directly onto the surface because they are fire resistant. MagMa and Sand'Or are stain and chemical resistant, they can simply be cleaned with a damp cloth, and when compared with other solid surface products, have outstanding scratch resilstance. MagMa and Sand'Or are a users dream come true.' says the company.

Potentlally, from the point of view of fabricators of acrylic and polyester resin
solid surfaces, a greatly reduced fabrication time can be achieved, as these
products are worked dry. MagMa and Sand'Or, in the unlikely event of damage are both repairable.

MagMa and Sand'Or are available in three thicknesses 5, 10 and 12mm, standard sheet sizes are 615 and 915 x 2750mm.
