TTA Awards 2011 finalists announced

The 2011 Tile Association Awards celebrate all that is best in the wall and floor tile industry.They recognise and reward the products, people, businesses and projects in the tile industry.

These are the finalists. The winners will be announced at the annual TTA Gala Dinner on Saturday, 2nd April 2011 at the Birmingham Hilton Hotel, National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham.

PROJECTS:

Best use of tile in a public sector contract:

Harlow Leisure Swimming Pool by N&C Moderna - Over 6500m? of tiling went into the new £25 million LeisureZone in Harlow, Essex.
Newport Station by WB Simpson & Sons (Midlands) - All materials used carry the 'Eco' tag.
QE Hospital, Birmingham (pictured) by Birmingham Tile and Mosaic - Mapei products were used to prepare 2,400m2 of floors for the tiling
Suffolk New College, Ipswich by Cottrell Ceramics - Over 1000 m2 of Johnson Tiles were laid in the entrance atrium area.

Best use of tile in a private sector contract:

Colour Bar Hair Salon, Sligo by The Gilroy Tiles Group - The Architects requested the 'wow' factor for this project in Sligo Town, Ireland.
Dixons Concept Store, Birmingham (pictured) by Wilson & Wylie Contracts - 1200m2 of porcelain tiles were laid in rapid-setting cement-based adhesive and joints grouted in rapid-curing grouts.
Eldon Square Shopping Mall by P Plunkett Tiling Contractors. Mapei products were used to install a total of over 4,000m2 of tiles.
St Malachy's Church Belfast by Armatile - This contract involved the manufacturing of new and, reproduction pieces.

Best use of tile by a house developer:

Park House, Pinkstone Homes, Hale, Cheshire by Natural Stone Emporium. This project includes six bathrooms and a leisure complex with a swimming pool, sauna and steam room.
St Stephens Gardens, Westbourne Park, London (pictured) by Stone & Ceramic - The property has been developed into five separate apartments and outfitted to a high specification. 

Best technical use of tile in a contract:

Cathedral Church of St Mary, Newcastle. Tiles by Craven Dunnill and Fixing by P Plunkett - The design incorporates over 70 different tiles laid in geometric patterns.
Earth Sciences Building, Oxford University by W B Simpson & Sons (Midlands) - This project includes the facade and floor tiling in the ground floor atrium.
Kentish Town Sports Centre by Wilson & Wylie Contracts - This project is the refurbishment of a Grade 2 listed Victorian Baths.
Scott's on the Rocks by David Scott Tile and Stone Specialists - This is a highly ambitious, aspirational project.

Best use of tile within the leisure or hospitality industry:

* Best-use-of-tile-leisure-hospitality.jpgFulwell Spa, Essex by N&C Moderna - This project includes a sun mural and tiling to the hydrotherapy pool.
Kentish Town Sports Centre by Wilson & Wylie Contracts - This project is the refurbishment of a Grade 2 listed Victorian Baths.
The Green House Hotel, Bournemouth by Hansard Tilers - The bathrooms of this 32 bedroom boutique hotel were tiled with 700m2 of Johnson Tiles.
The Savoy Hotel Entrance Foyer (pictured) by Arrow Tiling - Five tilers worked on this project for over 12 months.

Best use of tile in a private house:

Ballywalter Park by Armatile - Armatile created a floor that moved with the shape of the room.
Hanson Hall, Cheshire by Natural Stone Emporium - This is a stunning property, partly Listed, with parts dating back to 1400.
Private House, Beaconfield (pictured) by Mosaic Restoration Co. - The mosaic was installed in one day.
Private House, Nottinghamshire by East Midlands Ceramics - This includes an indoor swimming pool and wet room.

Most innovative tile installation :

Ballywalter Park by Armatile - Armatile created a floor that moved with the shape of the room.
Colour Bar Hair Salon, Sligo, Republic of Ireland by Peronda Ceramicas SA/Gilroy Tiling Group - The brief was simple; the client wanted something on the floor to dazzle new clients.
Phoolan the Elephant by Ardex UK - Ardex supported the artists' work by supplying Adhesive, to fix the mosaics.
Tayto Park, County Meath (pictured) by TileStyle - Designed by Milo FitzGerald Interiors, this project is unique in all respects.

Excellence in tile industry marketing:

Synergy Range from N&C Nicobond - The range combines porcelain, ceramic, mosaic, paints, grouts and sealants.
