Livery Company launches new sustainability award for British furniture manufacturers

The efforts of British furniture manufacturers to become greener are to be recognised by a new annual award from the industry's Livery company, the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers.

The Furniture Makers Sustainability Award is open to British manufacturing members of the Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme (FISP) administered by FIRA International and which aims to recognise improvements in furniture manufacturing sustainability. There are currently 65 eligible companies in the scheme and they are being invited to compete for the new award.

The trophy will be awarded to the company which, in the judges' opinion, has made the most notable improvements in sustainable manufacturing during 2011, in such areas as environmental waste, energy, packaging and transport management, purchasing policies, employment, training and education. The judges will take into account the size of the business concerned so that the relative importance of the progress can be measured.

The winner will be presented with the trophy next May by the Master of the Company at its annual Installation Dinner in the Mansion House in the City of London. It will be retained for one year. Shortlisted entrants will also be offered the opportunity to apply for a Manufacturing Guild Mark.

A distinguished panel of judges will consider the entries which need to be received by November 25th. They are:

* Hugh Garforth-Bles, Master of the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers
* David Walton, chairman of the Furniture Industry Sustainability Programme Steering Committee
* Stephen McPartland, Member of Parliament, Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Furniture Group
* Barbara Chandler, freelance writer, journalist and photographer

A representative from FIRA will act as technical advisor to the judges.
