KBSA welcomes new kitchen design foundation degree

The Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom Specialists Association has welcomed the news that a degree aimed specifically at the kitchen design industry is to be launched next year. The Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom, National Training Group, which is supported by the KBSA, has been working alongside Buckinghamshire New University to shape the degree which will be open to students in September 2013.

"This is great news for our industry and a landmark development in the provision of relevant and recognisable training standards for KBB professionals," says KBSA CEO Graham Ball.

"These graduates would be an asset to any company and we hope that everyone will support the degree by publicising it to potential students and consider the part time options for their own staff."

Renee Mascari, Chief Executive, Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom, National Training Group adds: "There is a real sense of excitement within the industry about this project, something well overdue. This is a great outcome for kitchen designers... an opportunity to upskill those already working as kitchen designers as well as recruit new entrants into the KBB sector.

"The NTG has worked very hard to create a pathway for kitchen design and this totally supports our efforts to ensure the relevant NVQ's are in place to underpin this degree course."

The course has been developed with the support of industry leaders such as Johnny Grey (Johnny Grey Studios and joint course director of the course), The Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers, Hettich and Miele. Other partners include Lago and The Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA).

The degree is a two-year full-time or three-year part-time qualification. It will add academic credence to a booming profession, and offers participants the chance to study across all aspects of the profession, from contextual and historical studies, through to sales & marketing, design aesthetics, ergonomics and much more.
