Abode supports the Barnsley foodbank charity over Christmas

* Abode-support-foodbank.jpgInstead of spending money on designing, printing and posting hundreds of Christmas cards, this year Abode used the money instead to support its local community; in particular, the Barnsley Food banks, of which there are currently seven within the city.

Just like everywhere else in the UK in recent years, South Yorkshire has been hit hard by the economic downturn. Now, with the new government welfare reforms, many lower income families and individuals alike, are struggling even more to meet the costs of day to day living, resulting in many not being able to afford to buy food.

According to the Trussell Trust charity, in 2012/13 food banks fed 346,992 people nationwide and of those helped, 126,889 were children. Rising costs of food and heating fuel, combined with static income, high unemployment and changes to benefits, are causing more and more people to visit food banks.

Food banks rely on the support of local communities and that is why Abode stepped up to the plate to help some of those families in the Barnsley area have a happier Christmas, with more food in their cupboards, than perhaps they would have had.
